dd's red "bits"

bagpussmice · 30/09/2006 19:17

dd1 is 5 and seems to have a constantly red bottom both front and back. she says it feels sore, esp. in the evening. we are very scrupulous about cleaning after the loo, obviously I can't help when she is at school, but have stressed how important it is...
she says it feels like it's sticking together and feels uncomfortable. it just looks dry and red.
what can I do and what can it be?

It could be thrush - get it checked out by the GP as she may need something like Canesten to clear it up.

thanks www, wondered if it could be that, but there are no other symptoms.... will take her to gp.

she doesn't say it itches, more that it is sore...

loo roll for wees, and kandoo wipes for poo, maybe I will stop the wipes and stick to loo paper and see if that makes a difference.

she goes to bed with bare bum to let it breathe, so to speak...

I find an DD gets red if she uses strong soap, have you got a new one of those? Shower gel etc is too strong, or its the perfume in them.

We have this from time to time with dd1 and use weleda nappy cream which clears it up almost within hours, she just wears knickers at night after we put the cream on.

dd had this for about 2 mths
it was threadworms , no itching just pain in her girly bits
I was appalled and astonished and guilty
Worth popping a worming tablet through everyone just in case IMO
the evening thing is the biggest clue ever

Piffle · 30/09/2006 20:12

just read up on nhs direct... urgh!!
also feeling appalled, guilty etc... although I like to think our hygeine standards are high in this house. The scratching at night, especially as she has no pants/pj's on is a big worry now....

Bagpuss - don't now much about threadworms, but if its not the worms it could be the Kandoo wipes. Both my DS and DD got very sore and red from using Kandoos as they have perfume in. We have to use fragrance free wipes and bath soap designed for children with sensitive skin/eczma. When DD potty trained she had very red bits and I used canesten which did the trick. I also had to tell her to "stop scratching down there, it will make you sore".

Good luck

bagpuss, just been through/going through something similar with dd (nearly 3) though hers isn't that red, nor that sore. She never wakes up at night, but occasionally itches herself or says its stingy in the bath - mostly at the front, and when I've checked she's had a bit of red or pinkness after her bath which is gone later on.

I've wormed her (Ovex), and used Canesten cream, and its hard to tell whether either have helped at all - both seemed to for a day or so, then its back to square one. I also checked her for worms at night with a torch for four nights in a row, and have checked every poo for a week (all in potty still): nothing. My final guess is eczema, so tonight on MN advice I put porridge in her bath - no itching since, so maybe thats it. She does have a flare up of eczema elsewhere ATM.

That said, I'm still changing towels daily, bed linen every couple of days, and hoovering more than usual - just in case. The whole idea of worms freaked me out totally (my one phobia, plus I'm pregnant and not able to take Ovex - though I have got some homeopathic stuff) so am not taking any chances.

All I can say is, you're definitely not alone - and if Ovex doesn't clear things up, I'd go to the GP. Hope she feels better soon!

fatfox, just read your post - am going to switch wipes: been using Kandoo for a while, so didnt' think it was them - but as dd has only been potty trained for about six weeks we've been using a lot more of them since then. Any idea where to find non perfumed flushable wet wipes, or do they not exist?

Piffle, are you still washing daily? Am still doing towels, and all wearing pants at night etc, but have slacked off on bedding...every few days now, as have come down with cough/cold on top of pregnancy.

Hope the heartburn manageable!

sorry Bagpuss, am hijacking a bit there...

still washing towels and dd's sheets daily. Still on with militant hadnwashing and changing knickers, washing her bits first thing and again before bed
She is clean and clear now.
No one else showing signs incl me so I've let up on that now...

Bagpuss it has been rife lately it must be threadworm season or something.
Easily cured, with girls it's amazing and awful how it travels to their bits, that was what really confused me...
But also to ease the itching and pain, I used chamomile tea to bathe dd's bits in and it worked so worth noting.
also note about Kandoo wipes
Our plumber said kandoo wipes and the flushable loo cleaners and quilted toilet paper were keeping them in booming business...

Elibean - I use any make of wipes (Boots, Sainsbury's, Supasavers, Tescos etc) but always the fragrance free. Have to admit, none are flushable, but I do often flush them if its only one. Usually, I just chuck in a nappy sack then, when full, the bin (flush the pooey ones).

Piffle, thanks for the tip aboit bathing in camomile tea. I can't stand camolmile tea, so that's a useful tip for two reasons!

Try washing her pants in something like Surcare and don't use any softner. Washing powder can also help flare things up.
