Flu Jabs - yes or no?

Will you be getting a flu jab this year? What about your children?

DD and I both got one last year, and had a much healthier winter - but not sure if the jab be credited, or if our tolerance was up after being sick so much the previous year.

Yes, it was recommended because dd was hospitalised with atypical pneumonia in July. She gets asthma when she gets a cold/cough. quite scary. I'l be having one also as a mum cannot get ill & it did the trick las t year.

hmm I haven't had it for years but I think now that I am a Mum Of Two I might do - can't bear the thought of flu with two monkeys on the go

My dd has one (heart disease). I've had one once I think, paid for by my employer.

A letter came for DS recall for his Flu jab this morning

He has Asthma and has been having the jabs since he was very little

I have been having them too cos I had Puemonia and pleurisy several years ago

Yes, we've also had a letter from our doctor advising us to book in soon if we want the jabs as their limited vaccine supply will be arriving shortly.

Mmm there was an article in one of the papers about the vax being late this year (again!)

Anyone have pneumovax? Good idea if you have breathing problems.

I had the pneumonia jab several years ago but iirc it last 10 years

but the flu one is for every year

They're saying it's lifelong now Kanga, pneumovax that is, not flu.

Can anyone have one? My GP surgery wont give them unless for the elderly, or in special circumstances

i@m looking to get flu jab this year, may have to pay for it though.

had flu ealrier in year , DH had to take time off work as I was in bed for a week and hardly moved !!

Horrible thought to have to have it again and look after children.

Anyone know where it can be done privately ?

poppies - I was so desperate not to repeat the constant illness of 2 winters ago that we had it privately last year. The letter is from that doctor, and says that they "strongly recommend" all patients over the age of 8 have the jab.

Sittingbull - how are you settling in, and where are you in America?

I had a really bad chest infection about 7 years ago, had a month off work and cracked a rib with all the coughing. Every year since I've had a flu jab - I get one because I get v v mild asthma - and I've been fine. In fact, since having dd I've not really been ill other than for a day or two. Every year I would get some sort of coldy/flu thing and have a week off work and feel rubbish for another week. Whether that's the flu jab or the fact that life is so much easier since having dd I don't know.

I will be getting one - I'm asthmatic and I had flu two years ago - let's just say I'm counting on not repeating the experience.

I would get one for my two boys, but last year tried to find ANYWHERE private near me that would vaccinate and could find no-one with the jab in stock (I qualify on the NHS, but my boys don't).

There is an issue with them not having enough for those deemed at risk so I think it's often quite hard to find someone to offer it privately.

Flu jags also reduce the umber of colds you get in the course of the year. I get one as I have a kidney problem and have had 3 much healthier winters sonce I was given it. DH gets it as he is a HP and ditto.

DH gets one as he's asthmatic

When I was working they offered the jab for free to all employees

I am offered one on account of having very very mild asthma about 4,000 years ago

So they are quite generous I think with their criteria

why does the flu jab reduce the amount of colds as well? And how do they know what flu is coming this winter? Does the flu jab cover any kind of flu virus?

Am very tempted. If flu is around, I get it and have to beg DH to take time off work. Its no fun looking after kids when you can hardly stand up and are hallucinating
