Anyone know how to "read" moles?

My Dad has dementia and on my last visit to him I helped him bathe. I noticed 2 moles, about the size of a 5p coin, on his back/ flank. They were both pink on one side, but with a dark black outgrowth. Irregularly shaped. I have bathed him quite a few times and never noticed them before.
Do they sound suspicious? Dad hates undressing so getting a doctor to look at them is going to be tough. thanks for any advice.

They do sound like they should be checked out. The dark undergrowth is concerning.

Thanks, I thought they looked unusual. Any other opinions? I could try and photograph them and email the picture to his GP

Don't want to be alarmist but he ought to be checked out asap.
They do sounds worryingly like skin cancer or melanomas. Any moles that are irregular with dark patches need looking at without delay - especially if they are a part of the body that has caught the sun over the years.

Yes, thanks all. Dad has v fair skin and lived in North Africa for 15 years (never one for sunbathing, but we did go to the beach a fair bit). Getting him checked out will be a bit tricky because of his dementia. The GP (who is excellent) came round to listen to his chest last week and Dad was most unhappy and uncooperative. He didn't like the ear thermometer at all either. I think I'll ask for a telephone consultation with the GP and take it from there.
