PCOS - scan of my ovaries. What can I expect?

My GP suspects I have PCOS so I am due to have a scan on my ovaries on Tuesday. I am so nervous and I haven't a clue why! Blush

I was just wondering whether anyone can tell me what to expect.

Thank you.

Di he say if it was internal or external? I suspect internal as I have PCOS and I've had a fair few of those.

Internal scan shouldn't be uncomfortable. The wand they use is quite thin and they put a well lubed condom/sheath on it to help it in.

Good luck. Flowers

Similar but not exactly the same but I had an internal scan recently.

It was absolutely fine. Be prepared for quite a large dildo wrapped in a condom to be put into you and wriggled around a bit Grin
They might take some measurements, have you had a growth scan before ? It's just like that.

Took less than 5 minutes, wasn't uncomfortable and results back very quickly.

Good luck

I have PCOS and have been lucky only to have external scans (internals don't hurt as such, just uncomfortable). Be prepared with a full-ish bladder and they are likely to press quite hard to get a clear image (if external).

Though you have to wait for them to send images to your GP for official diagnosis, I have always had pleasant sonographers who have answered any questions and have shared any findings with me during the scan so ask if you want to know.

Also, just as a side note, PCOS has lots of rubbish side effects but don't let the rumours scare you. I was convinced id struggle to have kids as some women with PCOS do but we fell pregnant first try! Just remember everyone has a different experience.

Good luck X

Thank you Mummytobeyorkshire - unfortunately for us, we have been TTC baby #2 for 5 years with absolutely no luck. I hope my time will come again but have totally lost faith at this point. Sad

My scan was clear, so no PCOS. I wonder what is going on with my body. Confused

Why does your GP suspect PCOS?.

What sort of scan did you have; external ones for instance are not as helpful when it comes to PCOS anyway.

You should be rescanned and have blood tests done.

The cystic follicles associated with PCOS can and do disappear - only to be replaced by further cystic follicles. Also it can take a skilled sonographer to spot it. They can have a "ring of pearls" appearance to them.

A polycystic ovary can be larger in size than a "normal" ovary (which is about walnut size).
