Why am I so hungry all the time?

Thyroid recently checked, all OK. Not pregnant. My diet is OK, probably a bit carb / protein heavy, and low in dairy and fruit and veg. No actual restrictions, but this is what I like. The carbs I eat are mostly wholemeal bread (2-4 slices a day) plus one portion of either white rice, white pasta or potato per day. I do eat snacks like chocolate, crisps most days, though not loads.

Last night I had a reasonable portion of home made chilli (lean mince, onion, tinned tomatoes, kidney beans, spices) and home made wedges (I guess around 2 table spoons of each) plus some broccoli. I ate it all, then 10 minutes later was really hungry again. I drank a pint of water, hoping that it would go away. It did not.

I suspect you have a stomach ulcer. I had one and literally felt hungry five-ten minutes after each meal. Go see a doctor or failing that get some Ranatadine tablets- reduce the acid in your stomach and reducing the "hunger pangs" Although from a long term perspective you need to establish the cause. Could be taking too many NSAIDs , or taking them on an empty stomach, right to a H.Pylori infection. Anyways hope you get to the bottom of it.

Maybe diabetes?

I found cutting out wheat helped enormously with that, and increasing fats (and reducing carbs). Otherwise it was like I didn't have an off switch.

Yes I would agree it could be gastritis, stomach inflammation or excess stomach acid. I would get what felt like strong 'hunger pangs' much more often. Especially after tomato based sauces or spicy food. Chocolate also really inflames it, especially the sweet milk cadbury type chocolate. I am on Losec now (omeprazole). The thing is that eating more relieves it for a little while longer because you are keeping the excess stomach acid busy for another while, but it just comes back. I'd see a doc and get a stomach-acid prescription for a while that may help.

thanks all. I really don't think i have worms or any blood sugar issues. Ditto coeliac, I think I would have had a more significant reaction to gluten by now with that, and there is no family history.

Gastritis however... interesting. I have actually had this before, and it was treated with omeprazole. I also occasionally get reflux, and had it very badly all through my pregnancies. We have omeprazole in the cupboard, will try it for a while and see what happens.

Will also try upping protein. My diet is neither high nor low fat, we use full fat everything, apart from meat as I don't like it, but not excessive quantities. I don't fry things or have many takeaways, or add oil, but I do have butter etc.
