Doctor has prescribed Dianette.. what should I expect and how effective is it as a contraceptive?

Today my doctor prescribed Dianette for me as I was looking to go back on hormonal contraception and have a nasty flare up of acne, which has been taking over my forehead and chin for the past 6 months (absolutely mortifying at the age of 32!).

I was on Microgynon for many years, from being 16-31ish with breaks to TTC and whilst pregnant. TTC was 8 months with DD1 and 6months with DD2. I stopped taking microgynon when EXDH left me, then I met FWB and we agreed to use condoms as contraception. Now I plan to start taking Dianette on the first day of my next period (my doctor's instructions).

Does anybody have any wonder/horror stories?
Side effects?
What is the contraceptive efficiency rate?

It made my skin quite dry. It was also prescribed when I took roaccutane so I'll take it from that it's effectiveness as a contraception. Other side effects, none really.

I was on dianette for acne when I was a teenager and early twenties. It was great and really sorted it out. It is equally as effective as a contraceptive if taken properly so I wouldn't worry. I've always had bad skin (still do at 39!) but I was switched to Yasmin by my dr about 10 years ago. It is a contraceptive and also good for spots/acne. It's not as strong as dianette (in terms of hormones I think) but I have to say it was as effective.

I love/d it for sorting out my acne. Brilliant stuff.

Unfortunately I am too old now, and have had DVT so can't be prescribed it.

Only side effect for me was sore boobs and a little bloating. But it was worth it for the perfect skin.

it is a perfectly good contraceptive - combined pill is very effective.

Expect a change in your skin oiliness and then spottiness after the first month or so.

Thanks for the feedback! I was concerned about the DVT risk as there is a history of it in my family, but my doctor reassures me that as a 32 year old non-smoker I should be ok. Also pleased to hear it is an effective contraceptive! My doctor refused to give me Yasmin because he said it's the most expensive. Did dianette cause weight gain? I'm not overweight or trying to lose weight but I wouldn't want to be any bigger than I currently am IYSWIM.

I wouldn't say I got bigger- just that achy feeling which many get pre menstrually anyway.

Not all drugs affect every person the same though, so it might not be the case for you.
