Urgent help. WHat can make vision go blurry suddenly?

It started ten minutes ago and is getting a little worse. What can make that happen? I can still see, but things aren't focusing quite right. To be honest, I am a little scared.

I don't know - I have never had one. My head doesn't hurt at all though.

this happened to me once - can you see an oval shape getting smaller and make your sight blurred? if so, its a type of migraine

no, I didn't have a headache. it did scare me as I have a pre-existing eye condition but was relieved to hear it was a migraine

Could possibly be related to the pituitary gland which site next to optical nerve,I would phine nhs direct.

Well, if it is just a migraine, then I will stop worrying. The top of my head is starting to hurt. Not where I would normally associate with a headache (I would think that would be at the front), but more like a pressure feeling right on top.

Is it in the centre of your vision or to the sides?

Is it in one eye or both? Have you had any sort of virus ie cold, cough etc?

My left eye went completely blurry about 3 weeks ago and is only slowly recovering. I've got optic neuritis which is essentially an infection of the optic nerve. There is nothing that can be done, just a case of waiting.

If you're worried tomorrow, go to your GP.

they're called aura migraines i think, take some headache tablets

Its hard to describe. I think the blurriness is more peripheral. I don't see spots or shapes.

A detached retina is another possibility, but it sounds more like a migraine than anything.

could be to do with your blood pressure - high blood pressure can suddenly affect your vision.
A colleague had a sudden loss of vision a bit like yours and had to go to hospital to have her blood pressure checked. I'd contact your GP as soon as possible. Have you tried ringing NHS direct or the your surgery's afterhours service, just so you can talk it through on the phone with a doctor?

If it's peripheral, it might be an visual migraine. I get these sometimes but luckily I don't get the headaches. My vision returns to normal after 20 mins or so.

how's it now?

Ilana I've only had a migraine 2 or 3 times, but it has been exactly how you describe - blurry vision and then a headache that feels like someone is boring a large hole in the top of your head.

2 nurofen and bed early sorts it for me.

Dh had the same thing for the first time ever about 2 months ago - also got pins & needles in his face. GP was clueless, and it scared the willies out of us, but neurologist diagnosed migranes st away. Get it checked out, though - and may be worth having an optician appt to check from that angle too.

Agree with others. I've only ever had one migraine but it frightened the life out of me. My peripheral vision went really fuzzy and blurred and I 'thought the worst'. Never had one before or since. Luckily, I was staying with a group of friends who were all 'medical' types and they 'diagnosed' it straight away!

Thanks everyone. SOrry for not coming back to this thread until now. My headache got much worse (though my vision improved) and I had to lie down. I think it must have been a migraine. Hopefully I will not now be prone to getting more!
