Alcohol - drinking guidelines vs. actual intake...

So... not sure if I'm posting this in the right place, but... (and sorry for long post):

I married a guy who used to hang about in pubs a lot for company and therefore ended up being quite a beer drinker. After we met he gradually stopped the habit (due to having my delightful company, presumably Grin) and apart from occasionally popping out to see old mates or sometimes buying a couple of bottles of beer/some wine he didn't really drink that much any more. Due a to bad experience growing up I used to have a bit of an irrational fear of him turning into an abusive alcoholic so would go on a bit too much at him about his drinking if he did go out, coz he'd automatically drink the amount he used to drink (except by then wasn't used to that much) and coz of that he did once or twice came home drunk which increased the fear for me (esp. one time when I was preg). He did apologise after.

Anyway since our eldest turned two and twins were born (the cause? haha! Wink) he's taken to buying alcohol (usually wine) more often, verrrrrry gradually increasing over the months. I've not really said anything much about it in the last couple of years coz I told myself to just leave him alone and maybe he'd sort things out himself - plus I wanted to avoid being a self-fulfilling prophecy!! But lately it's been getting more and more, looking like a bottle a day. Yesterday I went and actually counted the wine bottles in our recycling box and there were 13 from the last 2 weeks, so indeed almost one a day.

He isn't affected particularly by what he's drinking (from my point of view) so that's not the issue - it's more that it's extremely expensive, and I'm also worried about the hidden affects it'll have on his health. Especially since he's 15 years my senior and I would rather like I'm around as long as poss. Hmm

I have mentioned to him that he's having rather a lot and he has had a couple of evenings here and there where he's made an effort to avoid wine and has instead swigged coffee by the bucket load... but then after a day or two another bottle will pop up and we're back to one-a-day.

So, because I know my mind may be a little skewed about what is 'normal' and 'healthy' I'm asking you all for advice about it... is it too much to drink? (i think it's at least twice the recommended intake) Could it be becoming a dependence? (looking at his coffee swigging...) How can I stop him buying so many bottles without being demon lady like I used to sometimes be about it?! Thanks all.

sounds like an issue to me and 1 bottle a day is excessive. I drink a bottle on a Friday, a few vodka drinks on a Saturday and one cider on a Sunday and that exceeds the recommended amounts too. I dont drink through the week at all. It's advised to at least have a few days drink free per week.
