BCG - looks like a red inflamed half brazil nut under her skin

Sorry.. that's the only way I can describe it. It's not bothering dd(10mo)but it just doesn't seem to be forming a head to release whatever is growing and trapped under her skin. DS' was angry for ages, but never grew this big, and eventually formed a head and oozed out everywhere. It never got this big, maybe about the size of a 1p coin?

I know this is quite a common reaction to the BCG vax (oozing and scabbing), but dd's reaction seems to be quite different. The whole area around the jab is inflamed, protrudes out about 3/4cm, and is about 3cm long and 1cm high, sort of brazil nut shaped. She doesn't flinch when I touch it. Saw the GP last wk and she said to keep an eye on it and I'm seeing her again on Friday. She said she may need antibiotics to clear it up but they normally only give them if there's a high temp etc, ie. and obvious infection. Dd is a happy little bunny at the mo.

Sooo, my question to you is how can I help it form itself a head? I'm sure if it relieved itself it would scab over nicely. I just don't want it to keep getting bigger. It's grown so big so quickly (over about 3wks). Was thinking of a warm compress but how do I keep this on a crawling, strolling, 10 month old? Any other suggestions? Bath soothing hasn't done anything (ie. constantly splashing warm water on it).

Many thanks

I would just keep it covered with a clean sleeve, and don't touch it. and see gp again, sooner than friday if she develops a temp or is unwell.

Hi 3littlefrogs, yes, that is what I'm doing atm. I had a good look at it in the bath this evening and it's definitely not even close to forming a head. I think I'll push for the a-b's on friday if it's no better. Just GP didn't sound confident or otherwise if they would work..

Went to HV this morning for dd's [late] 8 month check. Showed her the BCG. She called in their 'expert' HV on BCG's who's jaw dropped when she saw dd's arm . She said 'We see a child like this once in a while. It doesn't usually get this big' !! She is going to mention this to the top BCG doc and will follow it up with my GP later in the week. She asked who administered the jab, but it was at a different clinic. She asked for history in the family etc. She said 'it must pop, it must pop soon' as if she couldn't believe it hadn't burst yet. She said when it does it will be ALOT of oozing guck! OMG .

Anyway, will post once it's all cleared up so that others are aware if it happens to their lo's.

Just to update, dd's BCG popped the day after my last post. Aww, she was so upset. And the amount that came out was about two tablespoons worth, yuk yuk yuk. Went to see doc the following day and she gave her some AB's. They didn't seem to make much difference and it's still oozing watery stuff every few days. I remember my son's doing this too so hopefully it will scab over at some point. I'm hoping the skin discolouration will go away with time too. Poor little thing. I'm sure they've changed the jab recently. The GP said they've seen several like this lately, but this has been the worst. Humpf.
