My knee keeps giving way

My left knee keeps giving way, happens when going down stairs but can also be when I've been sitting on a chair, take a few steps and it literally gives way with a sharp pain. Can anyone give me advice on what it might be and how I can avoid it happening? Thank you.

You need a referral from your GP to see an orthopaedic surgeon :)

Have you had an epidural recently?

Ooh I've just had this for weeks and it suddenly got far worse when I did some skipping Confused - finally went to the physio.

My hamstrings were really really really tight, which had pulled on everything else so my quad tendon was inflamed, a little muscle called the popliteus (sp?) was inflamed, and my IT band was tight.

He prescribed icing as many times a day as practical plus the following exercises: clams 30 sec, clams with feet raised 30 sec, hamstring stretch while lying on back with one leg straight, for 30 secs, then repeat with foot turned out 45 degrees to stretch the popliteus, and 'sofa' stretches for the quads - bizarre but really stretches the quad. Also foam rolling for the IT band as it's not a muscle so you can't stretch it. This was agony for the first few days but not so much now.

I went back twice for acupuncture and the last time he gave me a deep tissue massage on the hamstring to loosen it off. It was bloody agony, and sore for a few days after, but (touch wood) I have been pain free for 4 days now and am slowly building back up to running. Never ever ever will I skip stretching again. He said it's even better to cut short the run by 10 minutes in order to do the stretches to a sufficient degree.

I am religiously doing these exercises every day as I don't want to go back to feeling like an old lady going up and down stairs - was quite scary.

Sorry if that's long - but it's all fresh in my mind! Good luck Grin

I haven't had an epidural ever! I do have recurrent back problems though. I work in a building with lots of stairs, but am about to have two months off, so perhaps I should wait and see I'd the lack of stairs will get my knee back to normal and if not, see the doc. Thanks for your help x
