spent the morning under a tree watching the Tour de FRance. Started feeling a bit puffy last night and out it down to tiredness. Woke up in the middle of the night and my hands and feet feel puffy and odd and my face was puffy. this morning, puffy eyes, puffy lips, and still odd feeling of swelling in my hands and feet and I feel a bit panicky.

I've taken a clarityn but it doesn't seem to be helping. Take more, get some piriton, or see if I can get an out of hours appointment. It doesn't seem to be getting markedly worse, but I had something very similar after a day in the woods about 9 years ago and it progressed over a couple of days, but I never had any hands or feet swelling with that, just face, lips and throat. Allergy testing was inconclusive, but tree pollen or sap were advised as most likely. I've not had anything like it since.

I'd get some advise - if it's worse this time than last time it could get worse next time you are exposed & that's what I think you need advise about

was it the same time of year you had the problem last time if so pollen is very likely & there is something called oral allergy syndrome which it could be

Thanks; the swelling on my face isn't as bad, but it peaked at day 3 last time. Never felt unwell last time, but I feel shaky and anxious today, and there was definitely no swelling in my hands and feet last time. But I do have other health conditions now that may be contributing?

And yes, thinking back it was exactly this time of year. I have to go and buy a present for my DD's friend so I'll pop into the pharmacy and ask advice.

Been to out of hours and got some more antihistamine and it's gone down a bit. Think it is a reaction to a silver maple tree.

doc said to take two loratidine, but I've bought some cetirizine as that seems to work better for me.

If no better tomorrow I'm going to go to my own GP. Feeling absolutely grotty now Sad

Hi Daisy :-) Hope you are OK now. I'm allergic to silver birch and have developed oral allergy syndrome. It means that I react when I eat raw fruit and veg, as my body gets confused (proteins in the food are the same shape as the pollen). Did you eat anything that could have caused it?

Hi Mary :) Just seen this; Yes, it's all gone down, but I am still taking a loratidine daily. I forgot today and my eyes are streaming and my lower arms and legs feel all puffy again.

Can't think what I ate thet might have triggered it; certainly nothing that I haven't eaten before but probably some raw fruit and veg in there. The first time it happened I had been eating avocado and crayfish, but allergy testing on avocado was fine and they tested me for seafood and that was OK too. I did say at the time that crayfish is crustacean rather than seafood (which I would assume was molluscs) but they felt it was close enough Confused

y'know I am just collecting things wrong with me since turning 40. I'll ask my GP for a referral to the allergy clinic.

Looking at links on oral allery syndrome, things are clicking into place.

Are you seeing an immunologist for the lupus? Mine also specialises in allergy - would yours be able to help with this? Or is it rheumatology that deals with lupus? (Sorry - bit vague on this.) Would they be able to refer you?

Sounds awful. Hope you are bit better today.

hi cardamom, lupus is a rheumy speciality, but they have an immunologist in clinic as well as it's an auto-inmmune condition; I'll ask about increasing allergic responses at my next appointment. It's probably all connected.

I have had oral allergy this year too. I was wondering if the profuse silver birch pollen this year was the reason.

I seem to be ok with bog standard supermarket fruit and veg, but have had bigger reactions to random, more unusual varieties.

I am wondering if this is the cause of my almost permanent mild sore throat which has bugged me for years and have given up carrots for the moment, after a particularly bad reaction to one in a dutch restaurant, that lasted several days.

Hope you are getting better
