Dental abscess spreading

Tooth broke a month ago, dentist can't remove so I need to go to dental hospital at the end of this month.

He put a temp filling in, then I got an infection/abscess. Went back for antibs, finished them last week. Still infected, last night it was horrendous, no sleep last night, infection has spread along my jawbone, lip is swollen, glands on one side all swollen, neck tender and now my shoulder is in pain. Tooth pain is indescribable.

No emergency appts at dentist. Rang 111, they said dentist have to see me. Dentist says no appt try another dentist or ring tomorrow. Rang other dentists they said they can't see me as I'm not a patient and ring 111. 111 said no ring other dentists.

I understand why people pull their own teeth now. No GP appts either, self medicating with painkillers and diazapam.

What now?!

You could go to A and E with these symptoms.

They are dangerous.

But your dentist is obliged to see you today if they are NHS one.

I would just go there tbh.

def go and see them in person, it sounds horrendous, what antibiotics did they give you?

It does sound bad. better than turning up at 'normal' A and E would be to go to dental hosp. Many of them have A & E. You need to go today, this afternoon, now. You have tried to see dentist ( I think they are on shaky ground not fitting you in) and can tell them this at A and E. Apart from the severity of the symptoms you describe, I think many dental a and e services are not open 24 hours, so you need to go asap.

Please please get seem SOMEWHERE somehow, I had same symptoms back in January...8 weeks it took me to get "better" I ended up with a face about 3 times it's normal size, ear inf, throat inf, eye inf and tinnitus. I'm still on sleeping meds which I was prescribed to help me get through the pain and put up with the ringibg in my ears. It took 5 lots if antibiotics Hmm

The dentist I work for routinely sends people to hospital with such symptoms in case they need IV ABs.

It's appalling they wont see you.

Go to A and E if you want to.

They will take you seriously. And not be too impressed with dentist.

You must be seen today. Please Please go to A&E, you are at real risk of sepsis.

Your dentist should be reported for not seeing you.

Amoxiccilan isn't very strong is it, when i've had similar they've always given me metronidazole

Report
libertytrainers · 15/04/2014 13:33

wonder if the dr could prescribe something stronger for you, have you tried calling them to ask?

I've sometimes need far more than what the initial course was. Once I wasn't able to get back to the dentists so I tried the doctors with success but you've tried that with no success. I would say you've exhausted all other options but to go to A&E. Maybe you should make a complaint after this.

yes you should be on metronidazole (just bear in mind it is really really dangerous to drink whilst on this. I know they say that with all antibios but apparently they give this to alcoholics to cause a severe reaction when they drink. So I'm told, don't know if it's true but I wouldn't chance it)

I have had what you have. Every second seems like a minute and every minute seems like an hour until you are literally crawling the walls and rocking with the pain and counting the minutes until you can take more painkillers.

The dentist really should see you. If they literally refuse, I suggest you go to a dental hospital. They will see you.

And I would make arrangements to change your dentist when you feel better.

Good luck. My sympathies are with you. I'd say have a Brew but that'll probably hurt too much. Have an unmumsnetty hug instead ((()))

You may well need IV antibiotics. Please do get seen. Hope you are OK.

Went to walk in clinic, they gave painkillers and told me to go to the dentist and refuse to move.

Luckily they've given me an appt at 4

Thanks for all the advice

Yes, that's true. It is also one of the worst for messing up your gullet and stomach. Erythomycin is effective for tooth infections and, for most people kinder on the guts.

How awful, really glad you got an appointment, once your treatment is over I would make a really strong complaint and find a new dentist.

Dentist prescribed metronidazole, was v apologetic she couldn't do more but they don't have the equipment to pull it there.

Thanks for all your help

Just a quick update.

Metronidazole worked whilst I was taking it, as soon as I stopped infection ran rampant.

High temp and swollen face and DP made me go to A&E. Doctor looked in my mouth (didn't feel neck or face) and gave more antibs. Coamoxiclav this time and tramadol for the pain.

Still in agony, face still swollen, jaw has a two inch rock hard lump running along it.

So two rounds of amoxicillin, one round of metronidazole, one round coamoxiclav, nurofen, paracetamol, co-codamal and tramadol. Consultation at dental hospital on Tuesday. At least another two weeks until they pull it.

But if all else fails A&E doctor recommended cloves. Fucking cloves.

Oh and 9lbs lost from not eating.

Hopefully all the drugs will induce liver failure which would be a welcome fucking distraction from the constant gnawing pain.

Shock
omg. I am absolutely disgusted on your behalf at your treatment (or lack of).
Firstly the dental hospital which you are due to go to - Do they have an emergency clinic. Call them and ask. Mist dental hospitals do have these clinics. You may need to sit and wait gir a whole day but you should be seen. Its worth a try surely?
Otherwise I can oy suggest you call and ask how much it would cost to be done privately. Although I suspect we are talking mega bucks tbh.
