Period-type bleeding a few months after coil fitting.... is this normal?

Just looking for some advice on what's going on here really.

I was on the implant for ages but came off it due to concerns about hormonal effects and breast cancer risk. I got the copper coil fitted about 2 (3?) months ago and have had one period since then. It was a bit heavy but I'd been told to expect that.

About 10 days ago I had cramping, bloating and general menstrual-type discomfort, but no period. About 7-8 days ago I started bleeding, only it was quite light (TMI: a super tampon was still half dry after 12 hours). About 2 days ago, I started bleeding really heavily (a super tampon was soaked through in 3 hours). I'm still going quite heavily now.

Is it possible that I had a chemical pregnancy and that this is the coil doing its job and preventing implantation? I've never had a period follow this pattern before. I've also not been following dates too closely so am not sure if it's in the correct timeframe IYSWIM.

I'm not sure I like the idea of being able to see exactly when the coil causes a potential pregnancy to be rejected. We really don't want any more kids but it makes me sad anyway :(

Plump - what kind of advice did you get when you got the coil fitted? I'll assume it's the Mirena.
I got mine fitted end of Feb and was advised that I would / could bleed for the next few months. Mine was very light and actually didn't warrant anything but a panty liner. BUT, when I was due a period I bled heavily (as usual).
Sounds like the Mirena is doing what it should. Do you have a check up appointment back at Gp's? I think mine was a month / 6 weeks after it was put in. I explained to GP what was happening re bleeding and it was totally normal & they checked strings (although I've checked them myself)

I'm at a point now where I have a period, even this one was lighter / shorter than previously. I don't bleed at all for next week or so, then I start spotting again.

Also, not sure you should leave one tampon in for 12 hours!
