Do I need to take DD2 to visit the hospital before her op?

no you dont have to, i was offered this when ds had an op, his was also a day case, its just a way of introducing your child to the ward, can be very helpful to children who may have to stay in a few days.

I don't think I would necessarily - if she decided she didn't like it for some reason it might make things harder not easier

yes its hard trying to explain to a little one they cant eat, hopefully though she will be one of the first on the list.

Yorkiegirl, don't worry too much about the morning 'starving', IME at that time of the day it will easier to give her a drink at 6.30, then just whisk her along with distractionary activity. The break to routine will help, and don't try to explain it t her, that will only remind her that she can't eat!
Take things with you (well hidden) that she likes and are easy to eat, so that she can have something as soon as she feels like it when she comes round.
