Advice please - DS has possible milk allergy

DS is 16 months. Just recently started to wean him off formula with the view to putting him onto cow's milk. All fine - I was mixing half formula and half cow's milk. He has had pure cow's milk for ages on his cereal plus yoghrts and cheese and there have been no problems.
DS always has a bottle of milk before he goes to bed and from last Sunday we decided to only give him full fat milk with no formula mixed in. Since then almost every night this week he has been waking at around 10.00pm in AGONY - very distressing watching him writhe around in pain for about 40 mins with wind and stomach pains. If he had not been fine otherwise would have called an ambulance. Last night we only gave him formula milk again and he slept all the way through so we figure it has to be the milk. It's very wierd - especially since formula is made from cow's milk, and he never has this reaction at breakfast. Perhaps it's because he is running around afterwards?
Anyway we can't keep him on formula forever and really don't want to go back to pure cow's milk so I wondered what good alternatives there are - I don't want to use soya since I've read that this is not that good either. Can anyone give me any advice - has anyone else had the same problems?
Thanks

Soya isn't a terrible alternative to cows milk.

some people use goats milk instead.

It is unusual to have problems with just "plain" milk.

However, my DD has the same. The difference being that she has always had a cows milk protein allergy, and whilst she has largely grown out of it, and can eat cheese and yoghurts etc, if she has plain milk to drink it upsets her (she gets sores in her mouth etc).

For that reason we still give her the Wysoy to have as a drink.

I can only suggest a visit to your GP to investigate.
