Night sweats...

Anyone know why I might be getting these? Waking up at 4/5am literally dripping with sweat Confused They started occasionally while I was pregnant, then happened every night while I was breastfeeding, but I stopped that nearly 5 months ago and I'm still getting them several times a week. Am 32 and on the pill. The room isn't particularly warm, and not sleeping under any massive quilts...any ideas?

I've had these for a few years (am 33 now). So random... I often forget I've had them as I don't seem to wake up properly, and think it is actually the fact that I'm dripping that's made me uncomfortable and woken me up.

Never been too bothered by them and haven't had it looked into. Googled it and saw all sorts of weird and wonderful things it could be and decided the doctor would probably say "it's just one of those things"...

Seems early for the menopause but perhaps you should see your GP?

nearlyready Yeah, that's why I've left it so long, really not expecting a proper explanation but it's starting to bother me now, hate peeling my nightie off and feeling all claggy! Will make an appointment I think.

Beastofburden My mum went through the menopause pretty young I think, though not this young...am assuming it's one of those things that could be genetic?

darjeeling Thyroid, hmm...Would that be over- or underactive..?

I'll be interested to hear what the doc might say if you go...

I'm pg with dc2 so not sure it's the menopause here. Wpuld be really interested to do a sleep clinic to get an official view, but not sure you can just "pop along" to one!!

I think that if it is hormonal you ought to get seen as there may be wider implications you should be thinking about.

and yes, age of menopause is one of those things that seems to be similar between mother and daughter

I get these, not menopausal, they seem to be vaguely related to my period. Had a hundred tests etc and no answer, just suck it up. They wouldn't bother me so much if I could sleep through them but I get so tired.

I think mine are linked to my type 2 diabetes. Worth a check in case you're prediabetic.

Could be either under active or over active if we're talking thyroid - it can be funny that way. I certainly had night sweats when my under active was untreated.

Please do go and see your gp. It's probably nothing, but night sweats can be indicative of an underlying problem.

I'm 37 and get night sweats like clock work 7 days before and during my period.

Aberchips · 21/01/2014 14:37

Not much to add but I am also experiencing the same - have been having them regularly since about November. Wake up every night about 3am dripping in sweat Confused nice! We're talking sheet soaking stuff here.

Did some Googling & most of the things I read seemed to point in the direction of night sweats being a symptom of some more nasty underlying things so thought it best to go & get checked out. It may all result in a "just one of those things" but at least then I'll know.

I'm 35, on the pill & no family history of early menopause, but do have a family history of diabetes which makes me a bit more inclined to get it checked out. Will report back - let us know how you go on OP.

Watching with interest. If I get my 'sugar numbers' down I find I don't have such bad sweats.

MissPryde · 21/01/2014 21:38

I would get thoroughly checked. Night sweats is one of those things that could be completely harmless, could be hormonal (think with women this is most common), but could be indicative of some more nasty thing you'll need treated. Always better to get checked and rule anything out in the small chance there's something that needs handling.

Blimey, lots of responses, sorry for not replying sooner! Thank you to everyone who's commented.

Right, you've all scared me into having it checked out Smile

Aberchips Oh, good luck, let us know how you get on! It's pretty gross waking up in soggy bedclothes. Dr Google is not my friend in this area either...

Lettucesnow That's interesting about the blood sugars, I've always felt I'm fairly sensitive to changes in my sugar levels (get very shaky if I don't eat regularly etc) but have never been diagnosed with anything. Wonder if it's linked?

Will see if I can get an appointment any time this side of easter and let you all know...

I have had night sweats when first prescribed a steroid inhaler for asthma and during the early menopause symptoms.
I had an overactive Thyroid gland but sweated during the day while active and not at night when sleeping.
Good luck on Friday.

Thanks digerd. I am also a pretty sweaty person in general despite being generally sloth-like. I am starting to think they might be hormonal, seemed to ease up a bit just before my period started. Back now though, had to flip my pillow at 2am cause it was a bit...soggy Confused

How do you feel otherwise.? I am prone to UTIs and kidney infections and often have night sweats as a symptom. You should have your urine tested.

Well GP appointment was abandoned after the night from hell with DS... Didn't think I'd manage to keep my eyes open long enough to get there Hmm Rescheduled for next friday, which was the earliest appointment that wasn't being 'videoed' or something...

Why is there no 'so tired I could vomit' smiley, MN?

I had this (probably from mid 30s or before or after - no idea when it started). It got worse in my mid 40s. Used to wake up in a puddle, like I did with mastitis.

I never worked out if it was more often during my off-pill week, or just after it, or random. Alcohol seemed to make it worse - but only sometimes. Is it worth trying to keep a record over a couple of months?

Never got round to seeing the doctor about it.

However, I have only had a handful of very little ones since coming off the pill over a year ago. It has been wonderful :)

I wonder if there was too much oestrogen in my pill for me, as I started to get oestrogen withdrawal headaches during my off-week in later years as well.
