Unusual sudden cravings after a bout of illness

This is something rather random that I've always wondered.

Up until the age of 16 I hated drinking water. I was brought up on fizzy pop and juices (yes, I know). I got mild glandular fever at 16 which lasted on and off for a good few years, along with some complications, and remember going out shopping one day and REALLY craving bottled water, which I'd never had before.

It was the most refreshing thing ever.

I've never known anything like that craving since, not even when PG. I like to think that cravings are the body's way of telling you that you're deficient with something and I think this was mine telling me I was severely dehydrated and pop wasn't going to cut it this time!

Has anyone else ever had something similar? Confused

I am sure it is the case. Animals seek out foods their bodies need, so do we, although mostly we have forgotten how to listen to our needs. There is nothing more refreshing than a weak salty drink (like Gatorade) when you are thirsty and salt deficient but its horrid at other times!

Yes, I occasionally crave Marmite (hate it otherwise). Probably need the B vits.

my mum has recently spent 8 weeks in hospital-she had bowel cancer and now has a stoma.During the whole of my life-45 years-I have never ever known my mum to drink milk-yet since her operation she has drank gallons of it!
Bizarre!

Yes. When recovering from illness I always crave a boiled egg (with soldiers). Protein maybe?

And in normal life I permanently crave green veg, brassica type things, not peas. I have broccoli or spinach or both in my omelette for breakfast every day, and at least one of greens/cabbage/spinach/sprouts etc at lunch and dinner too. It's not uncommon for me to cook some buttery broccoli/sprouts or stir fried cabbage as a mid afternoon or evening snack. You know, when normal people would have a piece of fruit or a biscuit.
Must be desperate for folate/vit K/iron or something!! it's a pretty harmless thing to crave so I just go with it and eat the stuff.
