Cold: Does Anything Help?

NotQuiteCockney · 25/07/2006 14:24

I have another bloody cold. Sore throat, chills, tiredness, etc etc.

Does resting really help? I hate resting, I want to go do things, as much as I can ...

I keep myself hopped up on cold tablets. I try every one going - sudafed cold, nurofen cold, etc. etc. Bugger the recommended dosage. I just keep taking them till I get some relief.

At night I knock myself out w/hot toddy and paractemol+codeine.

I find Brits very reluctant to help themselves thru chemistry.

People say, 'Oh, you should careful w/that' but it's no worse than all that drinking and smoking I used to do.

It'd be nice to 'rest' but who has time for that w/a 3-year-old and 7-month-old baby.

ps, i also usually keep a supply of DayQuil and NyQuil from the US - my mum brings me lots and lots when she comes over.

Sometimes, the NyQuil will do it b/c it's about 80 proof. It's acetominophen/paracetemol.

If that doesn't do it, I was it down w/a codeine chaser.

Hmm, I can't take anything too exciting as am breastfeeding, anyway.

Might take some paracetamol.

The thing that always annoys me most is a sore throat, and of course I have one of those. Grrr.

Oh, and dayquil just drives me bonkers. Actually, any kind of non-drowsy antihistamine makes me really really cranky, dunno why. I generally don't take them, but every few years I forget and then really piss myself off.

Dayquil and its ilk (day nurse, whatever) make me feel like I'm on speed or something. Well, like I've had lots and lots of coffee, anyway. And after they wear off I feel like poo. I would use them for a job interview or something, but not for regular life.

tunes olbas oil bath lots of cold drinkies containing vitamin c ( frozen innocent smoothies)

Report
NotQuiteCockney · 25/07/2006 14:43

Oh, I had a homemade smoothie for lunch. I might have some tea this afternoon (don't normally drink tea).

And yeah, maybe a bath. We're fighting with the water pressure in the house with the bath, but I think I can get the pressure up high enough to have a bath, maybe. [tired of builders emoticon]

Oh, olbas oil is a non-starter, am asthmatic-ish.

I'm just really really inconvenient and annoying, aren't I.

I have to do the school run soon, then make tea. DH has claimed he will be home "early" tonight, but his "early" often is 6:30 these days ...

Oh god, and I have two teenagers showing up on Saturday, to stay for two weeks, then we are going on holiday to Canada, and frankly, I'm dreading both parts of that experience. Gah.

I used to just stick colds out... until DS that is.
Now it is regular doses of paracetomol with as many fresh honey and lemon drinks as I can. The honey and lemon drinks would help fight off the cold and help your sore throat too.

you sound a bit worn out.juiced up orange, fresh ginger (for throat)and apple is a great booster for feeling washed out.

Report
NotQuiteCockney · 25/07/2006 14:50

Hmm, I might do some juicing. I've been eating loads of oranges lately (and loads of fruit in general), but maybe some juice would help.

I am low, my mom died suddenly earlier this year, so the most normal everyday setbacks just make me want to throw all my toys out of the pram.

so sorry to hear about your mum. it's hard not to feel overwhelmed when you are feeling ill and have a small children and its too hot and there is no magic wand. you could probably do with a really good nights sleep too.

Report
NotQuiteCockney · 25/07/2006 14:55

Oh yes.

DH continually forgets to check DS1 has a full bottle of water when he goes to bed. DS1 has started, helpfully, coming down to explain he's run out of water, but of course my side of the bed is closest.

It will get better. Or worse. One of those.

I just really miss running. I have been running obsessively of late (even in the heat), but can't be bothered while ill.

maybe just getting outside into a breeeze would help. change of air might even help. i think just moving slower than usual is resting really. sometimes just 24 hours of only doing what is essential is enough to give you some strength back. go slow breathe deeply leave the million jobs for another day.

got to go out now- hope you feel better really soon. thinking of you.

NotQuiteCockney · 26/07/2006 11:00

Hmm, had a good tea and a reasonable night's sleep. DH even came home early, before 5 I think. Very early, for him.

Today I am no longer feverish, I don't think. Just sore throat and tired. At least it's changing.

Also, the builders etc are coming today to fix the boiler, hopefully. Tomorrow I have locksmiths coming and will have nice new locks for all doors. And in theory, we might get a sofa today ...

Oh, and thanks for the posts, it does help to have a good old moan. I might try to have some tea today, it might just help. DS2 seems a bit under the weather, at least he's not moaning about staying in, thank god.

I am determined not to be on mumsnet all day like yesterday so might drag dd to the park with her bike and sit under a tree.
hope you have a better day.

Oh, ugh, you must have caught my bug. Sorry!

I can't stay in all day, as have school run (summer school) for DS1. And tomorrow DS2 is going to the co-op, so that's another trip out.

And I'm still feeling like shit. A mate told me she's had similar and it's hay fever from the weather and pollution! I'm hoping that's not it, as this really sucks.

I have a very sore throat, am listless and tired, appetite issues, and am sometimes feverish, although not very. Gah.
