Grinding teeth

I've always done this in my sleep but recently I have started doing this during the day too. When I notice, I stop but then I find I don't know how to hold my jaw without clenching it (rather like not knowing what to do with your hands when you're speaking in public).
Can anyone suggest why I might be doing this and how to stop? My teeth are getting smaller and smaller!

are you stressed?
have you seen your dentist?

I do this from time to time - in my sleep - I had a thingy made for my mouth when I was sleeping but I don't use it.

this isn't very helpful really is it?

I've got one too but I find it makes me feel a bit claustophobic. It's the daytime grinding that concerns me most. When I'm asleep I feel I can't be responsible for my actions but I should be able to control it when I am awake.

I do feel a bit stressed but probably less than I have in the past.

Steala I began composing a reply to this the other day but had to log off before posting. I've worn a mouthguard since i was 19 and i also grind when i'm deep in thought during the day (and like you i only stop when i suddenly become aware of it). I had jaw ache/head aches for years through my teens until the dentist realised what was going on and gave me a mouthguard - please stick at it because you will get used to it and it will make a difference. I use mine every night without exception.

An acquaintance who is a practising qualified Hypnotherapist advised me that teeth grinding/clenching (Bruxism) is almost always anxiety related, and that it responds well to hypnotherapy. Have you considered something like that?

Otherwise, what about having a chat with your dentist? sometimes, it can be because your "bite" is a bit out and it triggers the grinding. HTH

Thank you for your reply. How glamourous that it actually has a name! I think I have to admit it probably is anxiety related. I have PND and am stressed at work. I have an appointment for CBT next month so I might mention this too.

In the meantime I'll give the mouthguard another go.

Thanks again,

Steala

best of luck with the CBT Steala. the mouthguard will feel unpleasant for several nights, but then it will really mould itself to your jaw and the difference you'll feel next morning by not having ground your teeth all night will be really noticeable. good luck.
