Anyone had a septoplasty operation?

Am having this done this week and I am absolutely worried sick by it.

Does it hurt afterwards?
Will I be able to eat and drink?

Am so scared, having it done mainly for DP as he is so fed up with my snoring.

is your nose broken?

I had that but also reconstructive surgery at the same time (think that bit was rhinoplasty)

It did hurt but I was totally able to eat and drink afterwards straight away. I misheard the surgeon and went back to work 2 days after the op (and he had said take 2 weeks off!) and I was fine .

Thanks foxinsocks, I remember you answering when I posted about this before.

Am just so worried now the time has come. Am not having rhinoplasty as am having it done on the NHS. Yes I broke it a few years ago and its slightly bent. They have told me it won't make much difference to the appearance of my nose (which is a shame as I hate my nose).

oh yes, think I was a bit too honest about the pain on the other thread!!

It was bad for me but as was pointed out on the other thread, I think I must have had loads of other stuff done at the same time.

I think you'll be fine. Perhaps you are more worried because you're doing it for dp? Perhaps if you think how much better your quality of sleep will be after the op. I remember noticing a MASSIVE difference once the op was done.

and it is totally normal to be worried sick by an op - the nurses will be used to seeing terrified people

hope dp is taking some time off work to look after you

Yes I do wake myself up quite a lot tbh and sometimes I feel like I have stopped breathing and this also wakes me up.

Am scared of operations but have had a few over the years and always come out okay.

Once saw a nose op and the after effects on TV and it was horrendous, she had black eyes and her face was swollen. I know that won't happen to me because I am not having rhinoplasty (this was a cosmetic operation mine is just for breathing) but the fact that she had to drink through a straw and could hardly swallow freaks me out.

Two days thats all but hopefully I should be okay by then, am hoping I don't look too bad as DD has a party to go to on Saturday and don't really want to go if I am a swollen mess.

oh that would have freaked me out too

well if it makes you feel any better, I was totally bashed about, lost vast amounts of blood, did have 2 black eyes (from the reconstruction bit) but still managed to eat a full roast dinner that evening

don't know why she couldn't swallow? the op had no effect on my mouth or throat at all.

Yes LGI Yorkie. They seem quite good and the Consultant was really nice.

Oh good the pain itself doesn't worry me its just the feeling of not being able to breath and drink properly scares me most.

Thanks again, will let you know how I got on

Hey, how funny. I am also going into hospital next week to have stuff done after a broken nose. I am having an obstructed sinus cleared and the obstruction removed and then in Nov I go back in and he will straighten it and take advantage of the situation by giving me the nose I want....

I am also not exactly looking forward to it!

What day are you going in?

had friend who had just straight septoplasty and she had a bit of swelling around her nose but hardly noticeable - you would never have known she had had an operation

Thats him Dr Makura.

I go in on Wednesday. At the initial consultation they were umming and ahhing about doing rhinoplasty as well as they knew I was unhappy with my nose but the consultant then decided that he didn't feel that my nose was that bad to look at to put me through the pain of having a rhinoplasty and he said that it would not make a really big difference to it anyway so thats why we settled with just the septo.

What makes it worse is I have to have ECG done beforehand as I have been having a few palpations for quite a few months now and so they just want to make sure my heart is okay.

Had my operation, it wasn't too bad although I am still sore and runny nosed (sorry if tmi).

Is it normal to feel so tired after an op, had it done Wednesday and still feel so crap, feel like I have been smacked in the face with a cricket bat.

was wondering how you were!

glad to hear it all went ok - that wacked out feeling is from the anaesthetic. You need to take it easy for a few days - it certainly does knock you out for a while. I took a multivit loaded with B vits after my op because I was so anxious before the operation, I think my body used up a year's supply in pure anxiety.

hope you are not too sore - did they give you some painkillers? hope you have been able to eat and are getting some rest. Let us know how you get on.

Hi foxinsocks - thanks for replying

Yes still feeling pretty bad, my nose is still very sore of course but I feel lousy all over too!!! Must be getting too old for all of this. Took DD to a party and had to come home cos I felt so bad. Keep blaming DP as he wanted me to have it done.

Mind you my snoring is even worse now he can't sleep at all beside me because I am so bunged up.

I was pretty scared on the day too, felt okay when I first came around and the first night was fine its since then I felt so rough.

Oh well best lie down again - at least I have been signed off work for two weeks so thats a bonus.
