Had a really shocking incident with ds2 today

At the play park after school he fell forward onto the metal climbing frame and really whacked his nose. He came running over screaming and covered in blood. I scooped him up and took him to the sports pavillion - mums were doing teas - and tried to calm him. He lets rip with the smallest of cuts so when he saw all the blood he was hysterical. Lot's of helpful mums with ice packs and tissues but he wouldn't let me touch him. His nose was literally gushing and we were both drenched with blood - I thought it wouldn't stop and asked someon to call an ambulance. Brilliant scout leader dad appeared, a trained first aider and so calm, really soothed ds and assured me his nose had stopped bleeding. Went to A&E gave pain killers and cleaned him up. Says nothing can be done until swelling goes down.
I haven't been that scared for a long time. I'm still shaking now.

The scariest bit was the smell of blood- I bathed him and have showered myself but I can still smell it. His nose is hugely swollen and I'm sure he'll have blackeyes in the morning. The other worry is that when i washed his nose I could see that he had quite a deep cut just under the end of his nose - septum?

ooh awful you poor thing

as long as the bleeding has stopped, there isn't much they can do till the swelling goes down - I remember from breaking my nose but I have to say, if both his eyes look like they are swelling up, then his injury might be quite nasty poor boy

do you have to go back for an X-ray?

The doctor at A&E said to take him to our GP in a week to 10 days. The swelling should have gone and the shape of the nose seen more clearly. He's only 5 and child's noses are still soft cartilage so praying it's not broken. It's such a beautiful little nose it would be heartbreaking if it ends up crooked

don't worry - I'm sure it'll be fine. I remember when I broke mine (and I was an adult) that they said it is much harder to break a nose than you think. They can take an awful lot of banging!

Even if it is, there are all sorts of procedures that can be done to fix it but fingers crossed, it's just a nasty bang. Poor, poor boy - nose bangs are so painful aswell!

He's asleep now but so bunged up. His nose is still bleeding a little but he also has a cold so I think it's just runny anyway. Poor, poor baby.

oh poor you I hate it when the slightest thing happens to my little ones never mind loads of blood
Every time one of them is ill or injured I feel like I'm not cut out to be a parent. Hope you're feeling better now

Poor ds2 - he looks like a boxer. The bridge of his nose has kind of merged with his brow line and the bruising is already coming out. He's going to have a corking pair of shiners by monday. The challenge now is to get him to take it easy - came down this morning to find him riding his bike round kitchen. Now playing a 'gentle' game of cricket in garden.

I feel better too - couldn't sleep and really weepy - it really shook me up.

So angry at hospital and myself! Phoned them about the cut under ds's nose - they said as long as not gaping it should be fine. GP friend looked at it yesterday and said it ought to checked at maxofacial unit as quite a deep wound- he's also been picking so the area of skin just under the tip of his nose looks like it's falling off. Waited hours in A&E last night only to be referred to Max Fac clinic tomorrow - apparently the MF doc was not available last night. They will have to sedate him, open the wound and stitch it.

oh no! did they x-ray the nose so they can tell whether it is broken?

your poor boy - at least he is being seen by a specialist - he will do a really good, precise job. I had to have my nose stitched up aswell and a plastic surgeon did it (quite a big wound) and it really does make a difference if a skilled surgeon (like a MF bloke) does it because years later, you can only see the scar if you are standing v close to me.

thats shocking!..poor lamb should have been treated for it all straight away!, i know the swelling would have to reduce but having a gaping hole there left unattended

He's just had a bath and he managed to carefully wash the dried blood(and snot) from his nose. The cut is looking much better, less of a gaping wound but it still needs fixing. Glad to say he doesn't appear to be in any pain - he is still manic. He quite enjoyed all the attention in the playground this morning when we dropped ds1 off at school.
