Large lump in neck?

My DH has noticed a large lump in his neck/chin area, about the length of a pen lid but quite wide too, he says it has been there for some time but has grown quite rapidly recently and is quite sore, does anyone know what this could be? Is it likely to be gristle do you think?

Gonna make a doctor's appointment for him tomorrow.

TIA

There are a lot of glands in the neck which flare up at the first sign of any infection. But as its been there for a while and getting bigger, its safest to get it checked by a dr.

DP had a lump on his neck (under his ear) a few years ago. it was a benign cyst and had it surgically removed.

I had a lump in my neck, it was there for months, i went to the gp and he sent me to hospital for tests, by the time i got an apointment it had gone. Doctor said it was a gland. Best to get it checked out.

Does it show a lot more when he swallows?

Thanks everyone, he says he can feel it when he swallows, and it annoys him when lating on that side in bed, it is quite hard and doesn't move.

My brother had a lump in his neck which turned out to be thyroid cancer (treated successfully and he's now clear). My BIL had one that was a cyst and was easily removed. And I had one that was just one of my glands suddenly swelling up to the size of a tangerine and went down by itself. So there's a wide range of possibilities -- best to see what the doctor says.

My mum had this - her thyroid gland was enlarged (goitre) but she had other sypmtoms too.

Had one for years - comes and goes. When I was hospitalised before dd was born, all of the doctors were more concerned about my neck than the baby! Was checked out, and is nothing awful -that was 13 years ago now. Can't risk anything though - glad he's going to the GP.

Ask him to swallow and see if you can see it sticking out when he does.

The wife of a colleague is being treated for Thyroid cancer and this was how they diagnosed it (by fluke, a Doctor friend came for dinner at their house and he noticed it when she was eating)

As others have said, it could be a number of things.

My boyfriend at university had this and was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. I had almost the exact same thing a couple of years later and it was just an enlarged gland that I had removed - when tested it looked as though I'd had toxoplasmosis but I was never aware of it!

Definitely best to have it checked it - it could be something or nothing.

Do you have cats?

Report
pucca · 21/06/2006 18:43

Yes we do have cats, why?

Ok well looks like it prob his gland in his neck as he has other sites such as his groin which have also swollen up, he is being sent for loads of different blood tests, and has been put on antibiotics, so i guess will have to wait till blood results back for now.

Thanks for all the advice and replies.

About 7 years ago I had a lump on the back of my neck. It didn't hurt but was an obvious lump, I let it go for a few months and it became a worry. I went to my GP who sent me straight to hosp. I was set to have it taken off when the consultant asked me if I had cats. Said yes and he diagnosed
'Cat Scratch Disease'. I suggest you look it up. I spent 3 days in hospital over this bloody lump and everyone thought I had cancer until this fantastic Dr realised what it was. It's not very well known and does have a silly name. It causes lumps and bumps all over the shop and worries the hell out of people.

Should have said about the lumps & bumps, it makes your glands swell up and stay swollen, even if they don't hurt.
