What on earth can I do? I've tried stretching and massage. What else can I do? It's sooooo painful!

Have you just had a long flight/drive?

Phew! I didn't want to say it in so many words 9it happened to me too!).

I had a similar cramp in my calf for weeks and went to the doctor - he said it was arthritis! I went to see my osteo and she said that I'd put my hip slightly out of alignment, had a rub and a prod and it was all better immediately. No arthritis either!

I have got a torn tendon in my toe at the moment but I've had that for a year, maybe I haven't noticed it's making me walk funny.

I have a dodgy back and it throws other bits of my body out once in a while (when the disks aren't popping to tearing - ouch). A torn tendon in your toe sounds very sore.

My oseto is a miracle worker (after many years of going to a chiropractor). Often a pain is caused by an injury elsewhere in the body and you sit or walk in a different way to compensate.

That's very interesting Backpaw... I've had back and knee problems all my adult life due to hypermobility. I wonder if the toe is causing more problems than I realised. It wasn't really causing any problems until recently. I can't bend my big toe down, which the GP kind of shrugged about, but referred me to a podiatric consultant. He wasn't that impressed either (they did an MRI to see what was wrong, the tendon that bends my toe down is torn) and said leave it unless it causes a problem. Now after about a year my toe is quite sore so I've been referred back. I might mention the cramp then, to see if it's connected.

Not wanting to scare monger but...

I had cramp in my calf for a few days the week before last. I took myslef to a & e, and have a dvt.

I have had one before, but this was nowhere like as painful. However I have a blood clotting disorder, so am aware that this can happen..

My GP didn't think it was likely to be a clot, so I took it upon myself to go to hospital.

If it doesn't start to ease off in a day or two please bear this in mind.

When I had a DVT my symptoms were: achey pain in calf and it really hurt when I tried to put my heel down to walk (so on tippy-toes on the clotted leg). I had just flown back cattle-class from Aus though. Who'd've though curled up like a hedgehog for 20 hours would be so dangerous?

I agree that it's possible referred pain from somewhere else. I have pretty much contant pains in right leg and it's from a misaligned pelvis

Thanks Yoni I will keep that in mind.

The pain is definitely in the muscle, when I stretch it (toes on a step, letting my heel hang over the step and bouncing up and down, like doing a hamstring stretch) it does feel like a cramp. But I've never had one last this long.

A very common cause for cramps is dehydration, and bearing in mind this warm weather it could be more of a possibility!

Ah, greenpurple, I wonder if that's it. We had a school BBQ at the weekend and I was out in the sunshine all day getting drunk, I've been drinking lots since, but I wonder if I just haven't had enough. Had 2 cups of fruit tea and a litre of water this morning though. How long should it take me to catch up?

cramp is sometimes magnesium deficiency. Good sources of magnesium are nuts, especially brazil nuts or almonds, and seeds but you might prefer dark chocolate Grin

eat a banana and an orange

HeadFairy · 15/07/2013 17:43

I've had a banana today... plus I always take a multivit which has magnesium. Of course you could advice me that dark chocolate was completely medicinal! I'm meant to be on a fast today (apart from the banana I haven't had much beyond the tea and water) but I could be forced to break it for urgent medical issues :o

painkillers are better than bananas.

Lacking in salt?

Report
alreadytaken · 15/07/2013 19:31

not a lot of magnesium in most multivits so dark chocolate could be medicinal. The other thing you could have is quinine if you have any tonic water - next time you drink too much make it gin and tonic. Salt could be needed too.

Urgh, can't stand either gin or tonic. I've just had quite a salty chicken salad. I also had quite a bit of salt yesterday because I was hungover and needed salty crap

sorry forgot to say that if you have epsom salts you can bath in them and absorb magnesium that way. So it isn't necessary to eat the dark chocolate.........

I don't have any... perhaps I should buy some. Don't fancy a bath in this weather though :o

I'd really be getting yourself checked out rather than trying self help remedies to see if it's this that or the other, because if it is a dvt...

Report
Backpaw · 16/07/2013 08:38

True... With Head's back and knee problems though it does sound to me like a skeletal problem. It happens when we get older! It's always good to check aches and pains out though.
