Horrible bitter taste in back of throat?

For the last few days I have been getting this disgusting taste in the back of my throat - bitter, foul, just grim. It goes away withn a couple of minutes and comes maybe once or twice a day. Never had anything like it before. Its gross.

I'm not ill, no cold, stomach upset etc and good dental hygeine. What could it be?

My DH complains of similar sometimes and its thought by his GP to be caused by an infection in his nose/nasal sinus - draining into the throat. It usually occurs after he has had a cold. He even smells a little bitter if it is very severe!

Have you been eating pine nuts? I know that sounds weird, but there is apparently a cheap variety of Chinese pine nut that leaves a bitter aftertaste for a long time. It was in the news a while back.

Interesting re: pine nuts - I eat pesto probabky once a week. Hmmm.

I have a slight bunged up nose but not really anything much.

The weird thing is it just suddenly infiltrates the back of my throat and is GRIM...then goes away. Its not constant.

A tonsil stone or just a bit of old food dropping out of your tonsil or form a fold in your mouth and down into the back of your mouth? I get this alll the time. I have large folds in the mouth tissue and also pits and holes in my tonsils and find lumps of ffod/calcified food in there - now I know to look for it. For ages i used to get a horrid taste and then find a small white gritty thing on my tongue, now I can usually remove most of them from the tonsil with a cotton bud before they get too big and start making me cough or falling into my mouth and tasting foul.

I agree with pine nuts, it's called 'pine mouth' I think. I had this about 12 months ago, it's THE worst taste ever! I'd gone through a pesto phase where I had it with everything. It took a lot of research to find out what it was, there's nothing you can do about it, it goes on it's own eventually (mine took almost 6 weeks) Confused

Hi BassDownLow ,

I felt exactly the same as you for the last 3 days (bitter taste in the back of my throat . It goes away within a couple of minutes and comes maybe more than twice a day. Never had anything like it before).

Could you find a real reason and solution?
