Hopefully you'll have found your way here.

Here's a new race list list, feel free to add to it:

Playtex Moonwalk: 20 May, JoPG, Posey
British 10K: 2nd July, Crunchie, Titchy
RFL Newbury: 2nd July, Twink, Mini Twink, Twink's mum
RFL July: Dingle

Too late for me tonight but I'll post some 5k & 10k training ideas here soon.

Found this one too! Yes crunchie it is the same one. I'd quite like tips for going faster too - although I have found doing 1 short run a week at break-neck speed has really helped. Well when I say break-neck speed I'm actually talking about 10 min-mile rate, but that's break-neck to me considering I started out at closer to 12 minute miles! Grin I'm going to try a bit of interval running tonight, maybe just 2 x 10 min. sessions of 1 min fast 1 min slow and see how I go.

I would definately get used to the distance first by doing one 10k run a week, or aiming for that in a few weeks, then your other two runs can be speed work - intervals plus a short fast run maybe?

Looking forward to Twink's training plans!

Is anyone else doing the British 10k?

Hello Smile - did my 8-miler on Saturday. Had to walk a bit of it - you'd need to be a mountain goat to run it - and as you'll know I don't 'do' hills.

The charity bike team raised £8500.

No running from me this weekend cos I was away at a netball tournament in Somerset. We had a great weekend and lost out in the final by 1 goal in extra time. With 108 teams there though we did pretty well, and we won some prize money to put towards a new kit. Ached in places I had forgotten I had, I felt pretty fit after the marathon, but netball is a whole different kind of workout.
Gonna try and go out tonight for a run, i love the lighter evenings!

JoPG Well Done i am Envy last netball tornament i went on was in 1996 at Bream Sands.
Still playing and beat the University team a while ago.
Its the bit where your leg stops and bum begins that really hurts.
Sorry havent mentioned running, still havent found time to train.
10 mile runs on a Saturday morning are a distant memorySad

Hulloooo, just sauntering over here from the running thread in Sport, which mostly consisted of me talking to myself, with Leogaela popping in to say 'hi' occasionally Grin.

Have been running a couple of days a week since September, and have just joined a running club who I'll go out with once a week. Am very excited, as I ran my first ever 10k at the weekend, and in my enthusiasm have signed up to do the Windsor Half marathon in September. Gulp. Keep being told it is 'hilly', which I did know before agreeing to it. Better find some slopes to practise on.

AM doing the RFL on Blackheath on 2nd July.

Think should be able to do it in around 28 mins which is what I do at the gym, is that reasonable????

Have made a promise to do the marathon before I am 35 so better get a bit better soon!!!

My 5k is on 23 July at Gillingham, Kent and I am a complete novice.

I only get a couple of hours to myself while Amelia is at nursery and I have a lot to fit into that time, so my "training" just hasn't happened as of yet!Blush We got the running machine set up last night so I am starting TONIGHT!!!Shock

Not sure what I should aim for though..lost my training plan now! LOL.

Hello Twinkie and Pidge.

28 mins is very reasonable Twinkie - I think that was the time I did my first one in. The only problem is that the races are soooo busy that you might find the first bit pretty slow going.

Aaahhh, there you all are!

Hello all - congratulations to all FLM peeps, I am very envious indeed. Did have an official note from my mum though, to say I was 'sick' (ie 4.5 months pregnant) and off games. Roll on next year.

Can I ask all you RFL veterans about the usual turnout? Do they book up early? There are several in Cambridge early in July and I'll probably still be capable of staggering around 5k by then. Pining a bit for a bit of race day camaraderie, tbh, made worse by having to watch DH run the Paris marathon at the beginning of April and finally settle it that he is, in fact, a damn sight faster than me....

Still pottering around a couple of times a week, but it's getting hot and I have the lungs of an 83 year ex-asbestos worker, so the enjoyment factor is waning a bit Sad. May have to restrain myself for the rest of the summer to sitting on the sidelines of this thread and cheering randomly.

Hooray!

Gizmo - glad things are going well with the pg. Smile

The RFL near me gets booked up really quick - it was closed by beg of April this year. And the next nearest one has put on an extra day this time....two races over two evenings. I think the website tells you how many places are available in each race and how many are taken. It is a brill atmosphere.

Report
Gizmo · 09/05/2006 16:57

Yes, it looks like they've put on an extra one in Cambridge, which will be late afternoon - suits me as it will be cooler, I hope.

The Cambridge one shares the last mile or so with one of my favourite long runs so I got kind of caught up in last year's event. Seemed like a really good atmosphere but even I didn't have the cheek to go through their finish line.

So, I shall join the mumsnet RFL club: don't think Twink will have much of a race on her hands from me, though!

I am doing the RFL at a new "venue." I origianlly missed it, as I dithered and it filled really quickly, but luckily enough they opened it again for another couple of 100 places and I jumped in quickly.

I was 40 in March and I thought it might be a good thing to get into, and being in the first Gillingham race will be even better.

I did the Flora Light 5K in 2004 for the Downs Syndrome Association (re; Amelia)and TBH I was pretty dissapointed in how much effort the charity had put into it. Everyone else had spectators cheering on their runners from the sidelines but if I saw another DSA t-shirt I was lucky and didn't even manage to get DS a balloon to show his support.

I think that the RFL will be so different as we are all running for the same cause and let's face it, there probably aren't many of us that cancer hasn't effected in some way.

It would be nice for me to aim for 30 mins, but I can imagine 40-45 may well be more like it.

Thanks for the luck SaggarMBK- I will need all the luck I can get!LOL!

Hello everyone, another RFL'er here. I'm running in Basingstoke on June 28th with my 8 year old DD. I haven't run for donkeys years and have just started training with some other mums from DD's school who are running RFL with me. I can totally realte to the asbestos lungs comment Grin

I'm doing a 2.5 mile fun run in 2 weeks time with DD and hope to complete it in under 25 minutes (25 mins is what I currently do so I'm hoping to up my speed a bit before then). Probably that's a shameful time to admit to but I'm doing my best Grin

Am doing the RFL on June 11th on Hampstead Heath, if my knee stays well.

Can I ask a question? I think the cause of my recent knee problem is that my trainers have had it. They've been brill though. Now I've got the moonwalk in 10 days. What do I do? I know they say not to replace trainers just before an event, but am I going to injure my knee seriously if I wear trainers that aren't supporting me properly? What if I got as near as poss to my present ones, which never gave me any blisters, and wear them constantly for the next 10 days?
All advice as ever gratefully received.

BTW rest, ice and heat seemed to work with my stiff knee before so thanks for that advice.

Oh Jo, I don't feel worthy of being part of this thread now I know marathon runners are here Wink

Just been out running in practise for the fun run I'm doing next Sunday. Got two thirds of the way round without stopping which is the furthest I've run. I'm determined to run the course without stopping so I've got about 4 more runs to practise.

Crunchie - have you tried \link{http://www.uk.map24.com/\Map 24} for measuring routes? You can enter a postcode, zoom in and then use the ruler icon to start measuring. It's fabby. I think \link{http://maps.google.co.uk//\Google Maps} have something similar, as does \link{http://www.runlondon.com/\Run London}, though don't know if that's only London or not.

After saying I would never do the FLM again, I was actually thinking I might, to beat my time! But I went out last night for the first time since 23rd - did cycling last week - and my legs were awful! :( I felt ok in myself and thought I'd recovered, but obviously not. My knees were the worst - they are still bad now and I only did 3 miles!! Am quite upset as I think I might have to give it up for a while :(

Hi, I'm joining this thread as well!

Paddintonbear, what's up with your legs, the muscles are still sore or something worse? If its the muscles then stretch, massage and take magnesium, run gently and slowly even if only 3 miles :)! It could just be tired muscles that are making your knees sore.
