Does the age you started your periods have any bearing on when your dd does?

I was very late starting mine (15yrs), I had norks from 12 ish but no periods- which of course I was desperate for .

Dd is quite small for her age (she is 10 now) - I just wonder if she will start sooner - I know that girls are generally starting younger now.

What's your experience?

The average age of menarche falls by 6 months with each generation.

My mother started at 13 and I started at 12.5, so it would be reasonable to expect DD to start at around 12.

My mums periods started when she was 12. Mine started when I was 14.

Mine started at 11. Eldest daughter 13.5 and next daughter 13, so no correlation here thank goodness.

Hopefully I will have a few years to go then! Smile I had VILE PMT (not any more, gawd bless mirena)and as dd and I are quite similarly tempered I suspect we may be in for rough week every month Grin

I have twin girls. One started a month before her 12th birthday, similar time to me. No sign of things starting with other DD. I think a lot of it is weight related. The DD who hasn't started is tall and skinny and sport mad whereas her sister is a bit chunkier.

I was 14. Dd1 was 10.

I had very light and infrequent periods (I only had 4 by the time I left 6th form!). Dd1 seems to be regular as clockwork but thankfully doesn't seem to suffer badly with them like some of her friends.

Mum was 16, I was 14. Both dds were 14.

Isn't it weight related? I think there was a Robert Winston programme years ago that showed once girls got to about 7 1/2 stone that's when their period started.

My mum's started when she was just 11, mine when I was just 12. Don't know if the weight thing is always true or not, but my mum was taller and heavier than me at 11, and my cousin was very tall and well-developed by age 10 and started hers then.

My Mum was 16, I was nearly 16 (and not quite seven stone, which I heard is the rough benchmark).Dd's are 8 and 5. Saw a few longer hairs on dd yesterday, like the very very slight beginning of pubes, only three or four but she is only 8!! I'm slightly freaked this means she will hit puberty early, any thoughts on this? No other signs of anything, I am hoping she is years away yet, I think starting in primary school must be hard.

I was 13.5, dd1 11.5, dd2, her identical twin, 12.

I would go with the weight theory - I was very thin and was 7st10lb at 18 which is the earliest time I had access to scales! - DDs were heavier than me, with DD2 a little thinner than her sister at that age.

Schooldidi · 20/03/2013 17:37

The weight theory doesn't hold true in our family. I was rather tall and chunky but didn't start til 14 whereas dd1 was tall and skinny but started at 10. Maybe she was about 7 stone ish, I don't know as I didn't ever weigh her. I was definitely a lot more than that by the time mine started, probably about 9-10 stone, again we didn't really bother with scales.

The weight thing would make sense to me as I started at nearly 12 but my poor little sister started at 9 and a half. I hope and hope DD will be spared that. She is a beanpole at theminute and very tall for her age - fingers crossed!

Not sure how old I was. 12ish? Just know that 37/8 years later I'm still getting the buggers regular as clockwork. Dd1 was 10/11 - can't remember - am I a really bad mum? Skinny dd2 was a bit older. Not sure how much any of my dcs weigh but they all look within normal range.

The average age of menarche falls by 6 months with each generation

that would surely mean many of them starting at 7 or 8 before much longer Shock

anyway, fwiw, I was just past 14, about 5'9, no idea what weight. I'm another bad mother who doesn't actually remember but:

DD1 says she was well past 15 (she was always very small for her age, & late catching up with her peers, but eventually ended up at 5'7)

DD2 says she was about 13.3 (she was above average height throughout, but also ended up at 5'7)

the women in my family are all very tall, but the women in DH's are short to average
