Short back story: rented property with a Rayburn as main heating source. First lit in Sept CO alarm instantly went off. So ce the we've had numerous back and froths with the landlord who's best soloution was to not light it (that was it! No idea what we should do for heating). It ce to a head beginning of Dec when after another sweep it was still sounding and kids and I were feeling generally unwell. They were staying at their dads more and more as the house was either freezing or full of CO. the LL finally stumped up for some chimney work after I contacted enviro health and its been fine since.

However kids and I have been unwell since yesterday with headaches and feeling sick. I hadn't suspected CO as the alarm hadn't gone off. Just went to check it and it had fallen down the back of the counter and the batteries were out Hmm plugged it back in and it a immediately started ringing.

Obviously I've poured salt in the Rayburn to shut it off and opened all doors and windows. The kids are asleep upstairs and is rather not wake them but given they've been exposed for about 48 hrs now (since I lit the Rayburn) would you wake them to go to A&E or just GP in the morning?

A&E. GP won't be able to do anything.

Think I'd be inclined to call NHS Direct or dial 111 & see what they suggest.

Whatever you decide i think that in the meantime you should open all curtains doors and windows including upstairs as the children are still breathing it whilst they are asleep

They're all open and door to the stairs is shut. The LL is getting a piece ofmy mind in the morning

I would give NHS direct a call. The fact they've had symptoms means they may need treatment.

Have you woken them to see if they are okay?

It may be wise to get them all checked out (including yourself) tonight, in case you have low oxygen levels in blood.

Cripes, I'd be too scared to let them sleep tonight if I'm honest, let alone sleep myself! I don't know if 48 hours is a long exposure but I don't think I'd be able to go without getting everyone checked out, even if it is a pain.

Please phone for advice and check on your babies. I'd rather have grumpy children than the other scenario :(

Please wake your dc and go to A&E.
They dont call it a silent killer for nothing.

Thanks for all the advice. I woke them up and we went to A&E. we were all suffering high levels of CO and had oxygen masks for 30 mins. DD was particularly unwell (she had been colouring in the kitchen for most of the afternoon).

My LL and estate agents can expect a phone call in the morning.

Bloody hell, that's outrageous. Our tenants reported the co alarm going off, the letting agents got them to get the gas emergency people out and arranged a full inspection the next day. We immediately offered to replace whatever was causing the leak. Turned out the monitor was faulty, but you really can't take this stuff too seriously. Hope you're all ok.

That's so scary. Sad How are you all now?

Glad you got checked out! Definitely pull out all the cards with your LL - pretty sure you could take legal action against them if they don't fix it properly, TBH.

Crikey could have been fatal. I hope your LL moves his butt and sorts this out NOW .
