I think I just threw up faeces?!!

Felt unwell since early hours of the morning, sore throat, achey body, swollen glands, felt a bit sick. not really eaten much.

Last night I ate take away indian with friends and had chicken jalrezi, rice, bombay aloo, sag paneer, rice. Lovely, washed down with 3-4 glasses of red wine through the evening.

Had a big bowel movement this afternoon, thought that would sort out the sickness feeling. About 10 minutes later I threw up, what I can only describe as looking like poo. I had vague reminiscent curry smell/burn to it, did not smell like poo, but the consistency of it, the way it was formed was exactly like it. A lot of it too, it was difficult to get out as it was quite solid formed (like loose stools, not runny). I was surprised that I threw up anything as I have eaten little, so it was completely undigested, or it was faeces.

Now, it could be that it just looks like poo but is in fact undigested food? However, the reason I am concerned is that I have, over the years, been sick a LOT, with HG in both pregnancies, so have seen a lot of different types of sick from different food, and including curry. It has NEVER looked like poo before.

But then, I think it can't be, as I had just used my bowels, so not due to constipation, although I have had constipation and today was the first bowel movement for a few days (not uncommon due to pain meds side effect).

What do you think? I have, BTW namechanged in order to not embarrass myself due to this delicate subject matter.

If you can keep a sample and get to A&E. Vomiting faecal matter can indicate extremely serious problems.

Eww

Are you serious? I'd try to get advice from nhs direct at the least as could be ulcer blood?

but, what if it is not?! then that will be highly embarrasing won't it?! I did read up that it can be serious and indicate obstruction etc, but I used my bowels this afternoon, although clearly the amount I threw up, if not faeces or if it was, indicated that bowel movement was nothing to do with last night's dinner, or the bits I have picked at today.

It is flushed away and toilet bleached now, I have hiccups badly now, feel a bit lightheaded and still have stinking sore throat, but not feeling too much like I will be sick again, so won't have any sample to take either.

I know someone who did, she was bunged up so it came up, only way her body could remove it.

You need to be seen to treat the blockage.

cuddly but i used my bowels just before though, which is why I am slightly doubting it, had I not gone, I would have had no question of what it was, although I have gone for 12 days recently without throwing up faeces, although I did feel very very unwell (and, again it went on so long as I was too embarrassed to talk to gp about it).

You need to see a doctor, BM or not.

I honestly think you need to go to A&E and I wouldn't wait about!

DH is at work, with the car, won't be home until 6:30pm so can't get to A&E, got both children here. I will call OOH and have a chat.

Everything I am reading seems to indicate that at the very least it could be blood in the vomit, which is plausible as I take NSAIDS for inflammation although for around 4 months ago started to also take omeprazole.

And it certainly wasn't the colour of the curry I ate, which was vaguely orange tinged, it was definitely brown. And I have eaten nothing that would make it that colour, no coffee, etc.

Call NHS direct - and you should probably be taking lactulose or similar if you're on pain meds.

oh crap, I feel a mix of fear and stupidity! fear = i don't like some of the possibilities I have read about and stupidity = if it is not (i don't want it to be!) I am going to look so daft! But, I have to do it don't i?

shotgun is lactulose like omeprazole, or a version of to counter the damage of NSAIDs?

Oh I don't know what omeprazole is sorry - I took lactulose recently when on tramadol. And I've had a hideous experience once with codeine (theough ignorance) so wouldn't risk it again.

Definitely follow up on this, it doesn't sound right and I'm sure you wouldn't be on here talking about it if you weren't worried!

oh, yes, I take movicol from time to time, if I feel I need it, after the last horrendous time, will never get like that again. Yes, I am taking tramadol, and the problem I had last time was because I swapped to codiene briefly, along with amytripyline for nerve pain. I stopped that and reduced tramadol dose, accepted more pain.

Red wine will stain anything in your stomach brown as will curry. You are just throwing up normal stuff, not poo.

I doubt its blood. See how it goes.

VivaLeBeaver · 30/12/2012 15:33

Coffee grain vomit can sometimes happen and can be due to bleeding in your stomach. So can be caused by NSAIDS. You do really need medical advice.

cocolepew · 30/12/2012 15:42

Even though you opened your bowels this morning you could still be bunged up higher up in your intestines. I've seen this happen with children before.

You really should go to A&E, good luck.

keema will it have the same consistency as poo though? as I have said, I have been sick sooooo many times over the last few years, I have thrown up red wine and curry too, and it has never looked like this, it has looked like dark puke. I am a seasoned puker!

It was not the colour in it's own, and it was not a very dark brown. It was, as I said, poo colour! mid-brown, not red/orange tinged etc.

But, I hope you are right.

ok. I will talk to a doc now see what they say.

Do not ring NHS Direct. I have never had any help whatsoever from this service. Unless you clearly have absolutely wrong with you at all - i.e. you are calling about a broken finger nail, all they ever do is ring you back and tell you to consult a doctor. Their rules mean that if you have any symptoms that could even conceivably be genuine and/or serious, they always tell you to consult a doctor. I speak from experience. I've used the service several times, and would strongly recommend not bothering. Skip the call, go to A & E.
