I have a big lump under my arm with big red patch about the size of the palm of my hand under it. Went to emergency doctor yesterday and was dx with a infected gland. I was very ill yesterday, fever etc feeling a bit better today but concerened as what I have read on google says these types of infections are very difficult to clear. Does anyone have any experience, it is very painful.

poor you!
I have not had one however I have seen people with them. Google is a dangerous thing, think the last time I googled my symptoms I was conviced I had lyme disease!
Anyway the antibiotics will help to stop you from feeling crap. The swelling itself has probably been an ingrown hair or a blocked sweat gland which has caused infection. When it gets to a certain size it is very difficult for the body to re-absorb all the gunk that has gathered round about it.
Someitmes a quick 2min procedure can open the abscess and drain the contents. Some drs surg even do it themselves.
If you do not feel better within 24-48 hours you must go back and see your gp (the swelling itself will take longer to go down but it should not get bigger). You may need the procedure done anyway or a change of antibiotics.

Thanks Chapsmum, glad you didn't have lyme disease Grin Antibiotics are definately kicking in as i don't feel so bad, but size wise nothing changing! Having to look after child with chickenpox and waiting for the other three to get it so cannot be ill for too long!
