Fecking splinter!

How do I get it out of dd's hand, she's had it for two weeks and refuses to let me anywhere near her with tweezers! Tried to pin her down today but she got so traumatized I had to stop (feeling awful now!)

will it work its way out at some point? help needed!

have you tried soaking in the bath?? or a plaster with germolene to draw it out?? it must come out

This is my Mum's solution: get a sticking plaster - rub soap on it (a bar of, not liquid), then press sugar into the soap on the plaster. Draws the splinter out - it does work! You can also get special 'drawing' solution from the chemist but I've never tried it.

When ds2 had a splinter not long ago I put Germolene on it (the kind with a local anaesthetic in to numb it and pulled it out with tweezers (bribed him with chocolate Buttons). But your dd's is probably too sore for that now if it's been in for 2 weeks. If it looks angry/inflamed I'd take her to the GP, tbh, she may have an infection.

yes, AllieBongo, to no avail.

when you say it must come out, do you mean it will by itself or I have to make it (somehow..)?

pin her down.. it's the only way.. bribery???

Report
dinny · 12/04/2006 21:06

seriously wrestled her for ages earlier, tried to bribe her with an ice cream, she was HYSTERICAL. unbelievably so. hey, maybe I could do it in her sleep...?

maybe a trip to the dr's then. she may let them do it. i know what you mean though, you don't want to petrifiy her

Report
dinny · 12/04/2006 21:09

told her we'd have to go to doctor and she was even more hysterical - there's no way she'd let them. maybe will go up now and try while she's asleep...

good luck. it's hard to get them to understand at that age, maybe you'll just have to lie to get her there

chapsmum · 12/04/2006 21:12

yip, was jsut about to say try it when she's asleep. If its not red or sore or really bothering her it probably will work itself out eventually.
have a look while she's sleeping and let me know how you get on.
Maybe a sterilised pin head would get to the route of th problem quicker.

chap's knows, cos she's a nurse! hello lovely x

right, just been up with torch and as soon as the tweezers touch her skin she snatches her hand away in sleep. don't want to freak her out if she wakes up.

it's not really bothering her - she just said 'ow, my hand' earlier, which is how I remembered she had a splinter. dh says it'll work its way out. gah!

Dinny - is the splinter still there?

My ds had a splinter that was mostly under his finger nail & there was no way in the world he would let anyone near it. It ended up getting infected & having to be removed under a general anaesthetic. BUT, he has also had splinters that have just fallen out after new skin grew underneath them.

I would say if you can see it's obviously not infected & she's not hurt then leave it, but must stress, this is only IME. I have no medical training.

oh, blimey, Witchycat. how worrying! dd's is in the cushiony bit under below her thumb (on the palm)

didn't dare go near splinter today and am at work now! will see if she'll let dh near it tomorrow (and maybe purchase a fave choc bar to wave in front of her as a visible bribe!)

isn't Tyra great, Allie?
