Hot Flushes

Since DS was born I have started to get hot flushes around the time when my period is due.

I just get them at night and they are not very severe, but I wake up several times a night sweating and throwing off the covers.

I am 36 so feeling a bit young for it to be anything significant.

Does anyone else get them?

My friend does. She is going through the change, but this doesn't mean that's happening to you. Go to your GP if your worrid, they can do a blood test.

This has been happening to me over the past year or so. But I am 46, so doc thought I was perimenopausal. Gave me a low dose hrt (which has helped) and then a blood test. But the blood test hormone levels are not at menopausal levels, so apparently Im not menopausal. But I saw a consultant not so long ago and he said my oestrogen was a little low.

However in my mid thirties I had bleeding in second half of cycle, it was investigated, nothing was found and it was put down to low hormone levels in the second half of my cycle. I was told prior to the menopause your hormone production declines gradually, and perhaps this is what is happening to you.

I remeber getting really sweaty flushes after ds was born. I was breastfeeding and drinking LOADS. plus was quite swollen up. think it is sometimes just your bodies way of ridding itself of the water logg!

Also check for underactive thyroid.

Are you on any medication? When you start some tablets, such as antidepressants, you sometimes get a bit sweaty. But it wouldnt really explain the cyclic nature of your problem.

I have got an underactive thyroid, and usually I feel cold, ratehr than hot. I definitely only get the flushes just over a few days when my period is due (normally for about a week or so).

It's not severe so I can't really be bothered to see teh Dr about it but I was just wondering if it always meant the beginning of the menopause (I know the peri-menopause can go on for years) or whether just a drop in certain hormones and nothing to do with the menopause iyswim.

I know that hot flushes can be a sign of underactive thyroid so if you have that already, its probably the reason.
