No miracle cures I'm afraid but I know how you feel. My ds has a terrible cough. The type where passers-by stop and comment. It'll run its course. I'll watch this thread though.

Try 'Potters vegetable cough remover' from health stores. Tastes !@#$%^&* disgusting but it does work.

alexsmum · 10/04/2006 21:29

seal cough could be croup-keep an eye on that.
no it doesn't sound forced it's a horrible sound like a really phlemghy sound and then a wretch at the end.
2 weeks ago(?) he had a n ear infection, in feb he was hospitalised with gastroenteritis. In january he was coldy/coughy/ and in december he was in hospital with croup.
i've had it up to the back teeth with it all.

in the morning dd vomits up mucous but her cough is dry and irritable, I think it is nasal drip, she gets so pissed off as she sucks her thumb and when her nose is blocked oooh she gets so upset.
We're going to the US - DP and me in 10 days am praying beyond words that she can string 10 well days together while we're away or I'll be beside myself the whole time....

humidifier or vaporiser (or damp washing on radiators)
raise head end of bed, on books or with pillow under mattress
medised for drying up any mucous

Report
Piffle · 10/04/2006 21:38

the bedhead on dd's bed has never been let down since November Shock
Karvol seems to ease nasal congestion, steam showers can help if the cough gets really tight.
If its mucousy medised helps to dry up the stuff...
DD could own shares in Tixylix.
This tiem I'm not going to use anything unless urgently needed... dd is walking pharmacy...

hermykne · 10/04/2006 21:44

has been ghastly season - many sympathies amexsmum, your poor little guy :(
pnuemonia at xmas, cough never really went away, then viral joint irritation which stopped her walking for 8 days, then sever tonsilitis, vomiting blood, in and out of A+E for a week with uncontrollable temps...
Just commented at the weekend how chipper she was and how well she got over the tonsilitis.

Ok, this might sound disgusting in so many ways, but it is an old cure and does help.

Peel an onion and cut it in half.

Sprinkle brown sugar on a saucer and put the onion cut side down in in.

Leave until the sugar is soaked with onion juice. Put a little bit of the sugar on a teaspoon and suck, slowly.

What is a cough bottle?

I feel terrible for all of you but I am so glad to hear that my 18mnth DD isn't the only one, I swear she has been sick for months. It is really depressing me and I feel like she has been living on Medised/Tixylix/ for ages. I read you shouldn't give it to them for more than 3 days in a row, I think mine has had it for 3 weeks. She has a constant runny nose and awful cough.

hermykne · 11/04/2006 12:17

cd i think a cough bottle was something the chemist would produce himself but maybe glycerine was one of the ingredients and then some of the things in the potters bottle.
that stuff works but try getting a 3 year to take it!

I think I will try the onion idea also. What ages are your children?

on the whole, cough bottles don't work, they act in a limited way, lubricating for a bit, as well as acting as a placebo. some people think that ones with the ingredient dextromethorphan do actually work, though others disagree
