Could be a number of infections but sounds like a vulvovaginitis which can be caused by many different bacteria. She needs to have some swabs taken to find out what it is. Is there any chance that she could have a retained tampon or anything? You don't say your mums age but some times a heavy discharge is suggestive of a foreign body?! Anyway swabs are most important.

Ibuprofen and tepid baths may help with he soreness also a sanitary pad that has been in the freezer inside a pillowcase can be soothing too!! HTH

It can be sonething as simple as a transfer if bacteria from the anal area into the vaginal area by wiping the wrong way etc. Vulvovaginitis is just a general term for an infection of this area. The best thing to do then is await swabs results and start appropriate antibiotics.

As Chapsmum says is she sure its not thrush has she tried some pessaries? Although the discharge doesn't sound classically like thrush. Hope it gets sorted soon.

creams are not always effective pessarys and tablets are.
Could be hormonal problem if she is post menopausal.
Would wait on swab result, in the mean time she could use vagasil avaliable OTC for feminie itching and add a few drops of tea tree to the baths for antibacterial purposes.
