Anyone broken a finger?

Dd bent her fingers back in netball yesterday and has been complaining that two of them hurt ever since. The middle finger on one hand and the ring finger of the other hand are a bit swollen and look slightly bruised on the underside of the knuckles.

I've left it a day to see how they are but they seem the same and she says they both still hurt. Trying to decide whether to set off for A&E for an X-ray. Do you think it's worth it? Should they be strapped up?

I'm not sure they will X-ray it Roller. When I broke my toe, the nurse I saw at the minor injuries unit says they can't really treat broken fingers/toes/ribs, so they wrapped my toe up (said they do the same for fingers) and sent me off. If you've got a minor injuries unit, might be worth popping along there? Hope your DD is OK.

Thanks, I really didn't fancy going up to A&E this eve! They seemed no worse tonight so I'll give it one more day and see how she is after I finish work tomorrow. Like you say they may not be able to do much anyway.

Dd did. Bent her finger back doing gymnastics. Very swollen and the bruise came up nearly straight away. I was too busy to go to a&e so strapped her finger up and took her the next day.

They did X-ray to make sure the joint was ok. Fracture was confirmed. It was just strapped, didn't need operation as joint was ok. Had to go back to fracture clinic to make sure it had healed ok.

Yes - least impressive injury requiring treatment ever :o.

I had mallet finger after a colleague helpfully shut it in a door. Went to a minor injuries unit where the nurse practitioner could tell immediately what type of break it was as it looks very distinctive.

They still x-rayed, though, and I needed a special splint made and physio! Fingers are slightly different from toes as a poorly healed break can impart fine motor coordination permanently. I think it's worth getting checked out, but definitely at a MIU if you have one nearby, rather than brave A&E.

Ah 'mallet finger' is a condition? I thought you meant someone had actually hit your finger with the mallet...before helpfully shutting it in the door Would've been a very unfortunate chain of events

They're still the same this morning. I think the bruising has gone but each knuckle looks a bit swollen (only a bit though) and dd says they still hurt. I'm at work again all day but if they're no better tonight I'll take her. Thanks for the advice.

I broke mine in sainsburys on a trolly......It was fecking agony really sore. I bought a bag of frozen peas and finished the shopping with my hand buried in it :)

Never went to casualty as didn't have time - just strapped it myself. Took ages to heal, was sore if I jarred it on the gear knob and couldn't bend it properly for about a year!

She may have just staved the fingers.

Yes. Twice.

Once playing netball. It was xrayed and strapped up to the next finger. It healed well.

Once, when I roller skated over my own hand. Too embarrassed to get it checked out. It healed, but not completely properly and that finger doesn't straighten properly now.
