It comes & goes and I have had it on & off since Christmas. I went to my doctor a while back & he looked down my throat, saw nothing, asked if I could swallow food & liquid (which I could) & then asked if I was stressed at all - which at the time I was. He said something about it probably being stress related & told me to stop stressing about what ever was stressing me out (easier said than done!)
Anyway, it seemed to calm down for a while & I forgot about it - but now it is very much back again.
I don't think I am stressed to the extent I was a couple of months ago (although I have lots on my mind), so I am getting a bit panicked again.
Has anyone had anything similar, or have any insight as to what this may be?
Am in two minds about whether to go back to my gp, as I don't have a sore throat or any other symptoms.

Didn't think anyone else would be as strange as me!!
Maybe I need to practise being calm & it might all go away!

Could it be an allergic reaction? My dh gets this sensation when he eats certain foods. Does it make you feel like you need to clear your throat?

I get this sometimes, generally when stressed. Feels almost like a tightness in the muscles under the chin (down neck sides iyswim). Have never had it checked out now.

I know how you feel blueteddy - I had a feeling like I had a piece of cotton at the back of my throat - I won't go into the story, its besides the point but my advice is keep going back if you're not I happy and ask your dentist too - in my case it was my dentist who sorted me!

Osteopath told me my feelings in my throat were due to little muscles tensing up and pulling. Certainly treatments from him have helped - GP must have thought I was hypochondriac! I was convinced I had a tumour!

Ask to be referred to a thyroid specialist - what you describe could be a swelling in the thyroid maybe? Have you had a thyroid function test?

Thanks for the replies - it is reassuring to know I am not alone in getting this weird throat tightening.
I have been under loads of stress recently, so it could well be stress related.
LMG, I was thinking it must be something sisister too!
I will see how it goes in the next week & if there is no improvement I will go back to my gp.

Hiya
I have a very similar feeling. Mine often happens when i am eating. I feel like im choking etc, am sick, but then can carry on eating!!
Ive seen the doctor about it, who said it literally is the "lump in the throat".

Mine didn't seem to bother me when I ate or drank anything - but in the last couple of days I have sometimes felt like I have a bit of food stuck down my throat after swallowing.
It must have been scary for you to have felt like you were choking.
Did yours seem to come & go? Mine definitely does.

Well I took DD2 (nearly 2) to the gp yesterday with a cough and came home with her having tonsilitus and possible glandular fever.
She is on pure penacilin for 10 days and the usual to keep temp down.

Thanks, jofeb04. It is reassuring to know that others have experienced similar problems & that it is probably nothing to get quite so worried about.
I have felt a lot calmer about it all since reading the posts on here.
I may well CAT you at some point if thats ok.

Hi Blueteddy,

Sorry you have this too, but relieved at the same time - have just been to GP for second time for exact same sensation of 'bits' in my throat. She referred me to ENT for peace of mind, but think its just 'one of those things' (?) possibly post-nasal drip from allergies.

Mine started after a cold in January, and weeks of Sinex use Blush at night. It eases during the night, and goes away while I'm eating - so suspect dry throat affects it.

I'll let you know what ENT says, good luck with yours!

Hiya
If you want to CAT me, please do.
Since being on Anti-d's, the feeling has since calmed down a bit, so maybe mine was connected to my IBS.
Hope this helps you

Hi fellow lump-in-throat sufferers,

Just to conclude my story: went to ENT today, and a nice man sprayed anaesthetic up my nose, then stuck a tiny tube up it and down into my throat. He said it was a bit inflamed, but nothing nasty at all - which is all I wanted to know. He also said - hence my posting - that throat/nose is very very senstive so anything different in there (dryness, mucous, slight inflammation from allergies etc) is going to get felt and noticed. And that all they can do is tell you, most of the time, is what its not.

If anyone else is contemplating getting their throat checked out, the procedure was a piece of cake - I didn't even gag, and I'm six weeks pregnant and very icky!

Hope you don't even need to though, xxElibean

Glad you feel reassured after your ENT visit. I went to my regular doctor about my throat when I first noticed it. He looked down my throat & couldn't see anything, then asked a few questions and told me that he thought it was more than likely stress related.
I relaxed a little after my gp visit & it seemed to go away for a while - but now it has come back & I find myself getting a bit panicked again - although I have felt a lot better since reading the replies on this thread & realising I am not alone & it is probably nothing major to worry about.
If I go back to my gp, I will ask about being referred to an ENT specialist - especially now I know it will be a fairly painless procedure!
