Winter vomiting bug

So last Thursday the onslaught began with the dreaded bug. I don't think I've ever been so sick. The stomach cramps and waves of pain were awful. It's left me on Monday, half a stone lighter which I'm not moaning about. But I feel constantly nauseous. I can only stomach thin fluids and tiny amounts of food. I managed half a bread roll at lunchtime yesterday and then a v meagre amount for dinner. Have woken up and just feel I could heave at everything. Is this psychological? I do still feel really yuck. I know nobody likes being sick but I think I'm particularly pathetic at it.

I don't think it is psychological. When I had it in September I felt queasy for 5 days.

Chippychop · 12/11/2012 08:34

Ds had it on sat, I've got it now. (S&d) Feel dreadful thought id have to go to hospital felt so bad in middle of night. Seems its sweeping the country. Hope dd doesn't get It.

sadsong · 12/11/2012 08:36

I had s & d, so did 2 of my ds. Dh was at work when it all kicked off and my eldest had to look after us all! He though appears to be immune! Thankfully

Me, DP and now 2yo DD have it. Fun times in our house last night.

WitchesTit · 12/11/2012 09:02

Oh dear, but I think once you've had it (the actual rotavirus) you become immune.
Ds2 was hospitalised with it a few years ago as a baby and it went round our family, the simultaneous projectile vomiting and diarrhoea was horrible and ridiculous.

I heard they are vaccinating newborns to protect them, if its true its a brilliant idea, watching my baby shrink by the minute and turn into a listless shadow of himself, completely wrung out by the nonstop puking and attached to fluids via a canula in a hospitable cot was worse than anything.

sadsong · 12/11/2012 09:12

Witches that's just horrendous. I was praying my 13 month old didn't get it. so far so good! Strangely dh didn't get it but he was on nights so missed the main impact. Don't know how my eldest son didn't get it. I would just add he's an absolute star. Not many 14 yr old boys wouldn't bat an eyelid at looking after puking brothers all night.

snickers251 · 12/11/2012 09:15

Just spent the last week looking after 2yo ds with it. Then getting it myself at 20 weeks pg, I got so tearful I ended up texting my mum thanking her for looking after me whenever sick as a child lol

Would not wish it on anyone Sad

sadsong · 12/11/2012 09:26

Snickers poor you. How r u feeling now? I have to say I had a life changing experience with head down the loo. And realised I'm going to somehow shut down my business. I've become so run down I just keep picking everything up. This really was the icing on the cake.

OP posts:
inadreamworld · 12/11/2012 09:45

I got it about a month ago and I am 7 months pregnant. Was horrible and I am the type of person who boasts that she never catches bugs. Serves me right. DD (18 months) and DH didn't catch it. Well DD was sick once then perfectly fine so I don't think that counts. Poor you - you will feel better soon, I felt a bit queasy for a few days afterwards too but the actual horribleness only lasted 2 days.

Chippychop · 12/11/2012 10:10

It's a real juggling act isn't it... Which end to stick on the loo. Thank goodness I saved the empty ice cream tubs. I promise after this never to take being fit and well for granted and to be more sympathetic when others are ill Wink

bakingaddict · 12/11/2012 10:29

The winter vomiting bug isn't rotavirus, it's usually the term given to norovirus.

Norovirus exists as two distinct genogroups I and II and within these groups there is huge variation. Hence the reason why being infected with one particular species, wont confer immunity against the other possible species you may get infected with.

Rotavirus is a different virus, and it is this as witches said, that babies will be now be getting vaccinated against as it's a major cause of babies needing to be hospitalised

sadsong · 12/11/2012 11:39

Good luck anyone going through the same. Today I've only managed water so far. Usually I'm thinking Hmm toast, but the whole ordeal I think has put me right off food altogether.

OP posts:
MordionAgenos · 12/11/2012 11:46

It's norovirus. And you don't become immune after your first bout, necessarily, because there are variants.

fishandlilacs · 12/11/2012 11:48

If it's norovirus you caught you'll only be immune for 14 weeks. sadly theres no way to tell what caused it exactly without sending off a sample to a lab.

Watch yourself because when my lot had it last year they all got better went back to school and came down with it again 7 days later. Do not rush into anything if you can help it.

Be utterly utterly OCD about cleanliness-I dettolled, bleached and steam mopped everything, boil washed every towel flannel and bedsheet, and washed my handstil they dried out. I didn't contract it even thought everybody around me did.

sadsong · 12/11/2012 12:02

Well I did think more of us would have got it. 6 dc at home, me and dh. But only 2x ds (who share a room together) and me. They've gone back to school today. I think they've bounced back quicker than me. I feel horrible still Sad

MiauMau · 12/11/2012 12:08

Never had it (have I just jinxed myself and my whole family?). How do you get it? Like a cold or flu?

downtonscullery · 12/11/2012 12:32

It's bloodly horrific. I never used to suffer with it until I had dc now, every year, guaranteed I get it. I had a dose of it in Dec 2011 then again in April 2012 I cannot bear to get it again. Horrendous d&v simultaneously meant my bathroom was like a crime scene.

I disinfected everything and cleaned and cleaned so luckily dh and dc didn't get it. I am robust about always washing my hands, using hand sanitising gels when out and about, but I always seem to get it....

IHeartKingThistle · 12/11/2012 12:36

I had it at Christmas 2009 and I haven't been the same since. Terrified of getting it again. Loads of DD's class off with it this morning - makes me want to seal the doors and not let anyone in till spring.

downtonscullery · 12/11/2012 12:38

I did hear they are 5 years away from a vaccine for the norovirus... I will be first in the queue when it's available!

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 12/11/2012 12:54

Thanks to all those suffering.

DS has been off school for a week so far, with really nasty D&V. Not surprisingly, it came my way yesterday but I seem to have fought it off. Single parent with no family around for back up in times of crisis - small nightmare!

MordionAgenos · 12/11/2012 12:57

I've had it loads of times (3 kids at different schools, husband teaching at a 4th institution, my job involves lots of travel, and to top it all it's endemic at our local hospital, a hospital at which about 50% of the parents at two of the schools work). I've had it badly 3 times. The first time I didn't know what had hit me, I was scared, but I had no kids, it was sweeping through DHs place of work, I just took to my bed in my own home and rode it out.Fine.

The next time - I was in Tallinn attending a conference. Tallinn. Which isn't a great place to be at the best of times - and this wasn't the best of times, it was in the middle of the coldest winter they had had for years, people were being found frozen to death in the streets all over the baltic and russia and it was allegedly about -30 in the evenings/nights. The allegedly posh hotel in which I was staying was bad anyway.

It was a whole lot worse after my night from D&V hell which destroyed the plumbing (among other things).

I thought I was going to die. I thought I'd never get home.

I didn't due, I did get home but it was appalling. I pretended to be upduffed when flying home to explain the copious V (the D had stopped by then). But it was awful.

The next time, we were on holiday in Cornwall and all 3 of the kids had it too. Vom-geddon. Squitpocalypse. The drive home was......interesting.

Since then, the kids have had it but not me. I'm love to think I'm immune but.....I know I'm not.

MildredIsMyAlterEgo · 12/11/2012 13:19

I came down with D&V hell a week last Saturday evening - approx 2 hours after 2yo DS and I arrived at DPs house in Poland. Thank God it didn't start any earlier otherwise that would have been a very interesting flight and 3.5 hour airport transfer Shock. I don't know what's worse, the violent D&V or the aching flu like symptoms Hmm

I wonder if anyone else on that flight was affected...

DP came down with it a few days later, he thought he was dying. I must admit I was probably more sympathetic than usual having just gone through it myself.

DS has so far managed to avoid it, touch wood it stays that way.

Oho yes, a couple of weeks ago!

Booked holiday from work, sent dementia-grandma off to stay with her daughters for a few days, had DD booked into nursery and was looking forward to the first 'us' time since DD was born a year and a half ago....

Then the S&D struck all three of us. On the plus side I will treasure forever the memory of DDs throaty chuckles as she watched me projectile vomit into the bath while sitting on the loo...

SchroSawMummyRidingSantaClaus · 12/11/2012 13:40

Hit DS last week, he was okay after a couple of days, then it hit me last Sunday and I still feel ill. Only ate a couple of slices of toast in a week. Managed some cauliflower and cheese last night and nothing today. Have went from a size 14 to a 10 in the week. I feel like I am dying.

I know this will sound bad but I am glad there is other people here and I am not alone in it.
