If you search the Board there are a lot of previous threads about constipated babies... Search for constipation or constipated in the subject line. I was looking myself because of the problems we are having toilet training DD. Hate to say it, but what you describe is not the worst story out there. And hardly anybody else seems to have managed to see specialists, either.

If this useless GP won't refer you, can you ask to see another in the practice?
Is it worth going private - if only for your peace of mind?
Are you in a hospital fund that will kick in to the cost?

SH - you could be talking about my dd... I don't know what to do about it either and I too have lactulose for her and yes she does eat LOADS of veg etc and an external pile...

no help but she's not alone - if you find a solution please please tell me!

Hi stressyhead, My dd became constipated approx 1 month after being weaned. This went on for some time and although dd was doing a poo every day, she was not empting her bowels properly. My dd also suffers from terrible wind and has done so since birth so I suppose my attentions were really drawn to this problem rather than the constipation. Anyway to cut a long story short, dd became increasingly uncomfortable every day. I had previously begged my gp for dd to be referred to a specialist for wind/constipation and she always said no, "she will grow out of it,nothing serious, blah, blah, blah. In the end I rang the NHS hospital direct, spoke to the consultants secretary and explained how dd was in severe pain ,suffering terribly and I need an urgent appointment, they were reluctant, but I eventually persuaded them and got an appointment for the following week. However, a doctors letter is always needed for these appointments, so I just rang the gp's secreatary and told them to fax the letter to the hospital and that it was MY RIGHT to have my dd seen by a consultant. The letter was already at the hospital when I arrived for the appointment. I was seen by a regristra not the consultant who was useless, so 2 weeks later I rang Bupa and requested to be seen by a senior gastro-enterologist and again got an appointment within a week. I rang the gp's secreatary with the same story and told them to fax the letter across. When I arrived at Bupa an xray was done and it showed dd was SO constipated (over 1 weeks worth of stool in her and her bowel was slightly distended. Lactolose (25ml) was prescribed and it took one week for her to be "emptied out" This all took place when dd was 9 months old. She is now 19 months and is still sluggish and on 10- 15 ml lactolose every day. I was told that we had to retrain the bowel, fibre with loads of fluids, and gradually wean her off lactolose. If needed we could syrup of figs, which really gets them moving. Hope this helps, just be firm with your gp - and if you are desparate you can always go private (it was very much worth it for us) and sometimes they will see you without the gp referral letter as long as it arrives shortly after the appointment. Good Luck!

My 16 month old dd has been doing this too, awful, sometimes clings to me for 20 mins. I give her some prune juice mixed with water and avoid bananas and eggs as they make it worse. Today she had a poo that was not hard but she still went through the painful bit, am taking her to the doc next week to discuss.

Stressyhead hope your dd is ok xxx

Just a quick note about syrup of figs, I was advised to get the adult version, not junior syrup of figs which is just a fibre provider. The adult one named CALFIG "California syrup of figs" with senna is a laxative and can be taken from the age of 1. All good pharmacies should stock it.

Just in case anyone one was thinking of buying it!

Poor dd's constipation was so bad tonight that I rushed her round to the doc. They gave me some suppositaries (mini ones) which did the trick immediately. She had a big hard poo that just wouldn't come out for about 3 hours and after the suppositary it came out in about 15 mins.

Just thought you should know in case it would help anyone else.
