15 month old DS has diahorrea, how do I get rid of it?

DS3 has had diahorrea since Tuesday. He had an ear infection which cleared up without AB's as i know AB's can make diahorrea worse. Thought it was getting better yesterday, but is much worse again today. He isn't eating much at all, but does nibble some bits.

I was told not to water his milk down as it isn't recommended now, but if I don't then the diahorrea is much worse. So any ideas on what to do? Do I totally starve him for 24 hours? Do I stop the milk, even though he wants it? He has lost some weight this week and while i am not too worried at the moment, I don't want it going on too long.

Hi calebsmummy, just recently been through this with my ds2 who's two. I watered down his milk and fed him only biscuits, the plain ones with a bit of sugar on top. He picked up in about five days but he then became constipated for about four days. Now he's back to normal. Good luck.

docs don't recommend starving it out now, dd 8mths had really bad runs about a week or so back and I phoned my gp, just carry on as normal but make sure to offer plenty of fluids and try to keep offering foods but make them quite bland, you just have to let the virus run its course i'm afraid Smile

Thanks for your replies. I know they don't recommend starving them now, or watering the milk, but it really is much more horrid if he does eat etc. When I started watering down the milk, he got a bit better. but today I gave him full strength again and he is bad again!

This is all part of that flu virus. He was ill 3 weeks ago with his 3 year old brother, got better for a week, and then on Monday his brother got a chest infection and Tuesday, Dylan got an ear infection and diarrhoea. It just seems to be never ending. I'm have felt pretty grotty today too, so I reckon I have it now. DH is also in Germany til Wednesday Sad (can you tell I am feeling sorry for myself now Grin)

I just hope he is feeling better tomorrow, all he has done today is sleep or cuddle up to me Sad

DS (21m) had a 24hr diahorrea thing recently. we cut out his milk and fed him the B.R.A.T. diet which is:
B - banana
R - rice
A - apple
T - toast

Definately seemed to help. Hes not the sort of boy who would accept a reduction in food so at least he could still eat and feel full! Smile

Poor you, things do seem to happen like that. My little one is hardly ever well and it get's you down. Is there no one else that can help out? I have a very close neighbour and we support each other.

I was told to cut out cows milk and offer goats or soya instead. We were also told to stick with that for 6 weeks to give his gut a chance to recover.

It worked both times for DS.

Thanks everyone, we haven't had any explosions this morning as yet, but I won't hold my breath (well I may hold my nose if he does Grin)

He went to bed at 5.45 last night and slept until 6 this morning!! I guess thats what he needs, to sleep it off.

I'm not feeling any better, but I am also not feeling any worse, so I am grateful for that. As long as I stay like this I can cope just fine.

Flip, I am afraid there isn't really anyone to help out. We moved here from London a few months ago and while I do have friends here, they aren't people I can call up on to have my children yet. Also they all have children too, so I wouldn't want to be passing anything on. Family are an hour and a half away, so if I did get really bad, I could call them. Anyway, I have decided I will be fine Wink No illness for me!!!!
