toddler dry skin patches? not itchy, but very dry...

ds, 20+ months, has dry patches of skin on both arms, and calves. they aren't itchy or red, but when you run your hand over them, you can feel them.

we've tried lotions and nothing at all. they arent going away:( is it worth a trip to the GP? (what i mean is; is this something that might be 'normal'?) we are careful what we use in his baths (and try not to over-bathe him)

try giving him fish oil. DD had dry patches and some eczema patches which cleared up with Eskimo oil. it can take a few months to work though.

also aloe vera gel can help.

i've been giving him that omega 3 oil daily for months:( or is there another kind of toddler-safe oil?

what is Eskimo oil?

If you haven't got any e45 in etc at the minute, you can always try and little bit of extra virgin olive oil, i find that stuff works wonders and have been known to use it on my face and psoriasis if I've run out of cream.

Hope it works for him, i doubt very very much he will have a reaction to it as it is a pure product.

i remember using olive oil on him when he was a baby for dry patches! cant believe i didnt remember!! i made him laugh while putting it on tonight, so it was ok:)

ds had that when he was little. can you ask the health visitor to take a look?
we were prescribed double base cream for him which worked wonders

my baba gets dry patches behind her knee after wearing tights... i just put nappy cream on it and its disappear the next day

Aveeno cream is fab & you can get it on perscription

what are you using atm? I use Aqueous cream each evening on both my kids. And also use a soap free wash in the bath (fragrance free) I find if I use Johnstons or anything with perfume their skin becomes really dry

Me and my dd get these. I just kept them moisturised and didn't really think anything of it. The GP saw them when i was taking her about something else and I was surprised when she said it was eczema. She gave me some hydrocortisone which I've only used twice when it spread all over her back.

It doesn't bother her, as you say, not itchy or anything, apparently a lot of babies grow out of it.

Something else you might try if you can stand it - skip a bath every other day - did that with my DS and it worked wonders - the red patches cleared up within days and I just put Oilatum junior cream on them to soothe.

I used left over Kamillosan on DS2's dry patches. Worked a treat.

My dd had dry patches on the backs of her knees and on her back for a long time. I ignored them. When winter started, they spread all over her back and legs and she started scratching. Doctor said it was eczema and prescribed Diprobase (moisturiser) and hydrocortisone - for spot relief for the itchy patches. Turns out the condition was exacerbated by the dry cold weather. She is fine now. Still got small patches at the back of her knees but they don't spread. Learnt my lesson though - I still moisturise them with Diprobase.

the patches have definitely gotten worse since winter has started (my skin gets dry too during this season). GP said it is eczema and that its common in toddlers. hopefully it works.. (luckily ds isnt scratching them..)

My google search brought this up. @lunarx did anything work for you? My 19 month has random patches, on his face now too. I normally use Aveeno but doesn't seem to be helping. Thanks.
