DD3 had a temperature Fri morning of 38, and then the usual it went away and by late afternoon it was up again and then went down in the evening. Tonight it has gone up to 38.5 at teatime, down to 38.1 at bedtime and is now 38.8. Ive given her calpol. At what stage do you wake a child to try and get the temperature down and what is the best way to do it. Im guessing at the moment I should just leave her but I want to be sure. She has a deep cough and is a bit snuffily.

hate it when they are so hot - you feel so helpless and worried.

Theres so many of these up and down bugs around at the moment and Im hearing stories of temperatures of 103/104...now high is that? I work on the other scale, a girl in my ds's class was taken to hospital this week because her temperature was so high she was halucinating. I think the news this week has scared me a little.

You could try nurofen as well, I'm pretty paranoid about high temps so do wake mine to cool them if it's above 38 but agree with Latz, window open and have them just in a sheet plus tepid sponging. Have you got a fan?

Am I right in think you can give nurofen in between does of calpol, so would that be say calpol at 8.00, nurfen at 10.00 pm or is it still every four hours.

Nurofen is three times a day so roughly every 6-8 hours, it is best to give it in between the calpol as yuo've got something to fall back on if the calpol doesn't bring it down.

So if I gave Capol at 8.00 could I do nurofen at 10.00 and then calpol again at midnight?

think so

poptot · 11/02/2006 22:03

Yes that's fine as long as yuor are only giving 3x doses of nurofen and 4x doses of calpol in a 24hour period.

sorry 'you're'

Thanks. Just realised her radiator is on so have turned that off............next I'll be worrying that her temperature will go down and she will wake up cold.

At what temperature do you really start to panic, is 38.8 considered high or very high?

BUT i remember a thread on here where kids had got hold of the calpol bottle and guzzled up to 40 odd mls of it and they were fine so praps my doc was over reacting. i feel for you, its awful when theyre burning hot to touch. good luck.

write everything down as i sometimes find a bad night or something can make you forgetful and if it's written on a piece of paper the times given than it's also good to show to a doctor just in case. also record her temperature and anything else you might find relevent just incase.

When I was a child I used to have fits from having a high temperature. It's normal. I think the saying is feed a cold and starve a fever. So if they have a cold keep em warm if a fever keep em cool and so on.

If you limit the amount of calpol/Nurofen to 2.5mls you can give every 2 hours alternating.

However NHS Direct said to me that anything really hot, give 10mls of calpol every 2 hours until temp has dropped. If you do this twice and it's still ultra high. Go to A&E.

It's fine as long as you keep a check on how much you are giving and when, if the calpol doesn't keep it down sufficently for the four hours you do need to look at something else. Obviously if you're really struggling with a temp for more than 24 hours despite nurofen and calpol you do nned to see your GP to rule out an infection which antibiotics could help with.

pepsi, why dont you ring your doc and see wot they suggest, if her temp is nearing 39, thats pretty hot and such a worry for you. i think the other mums are right about a fan or open window

Do you mean that as "Everything" or everything for thermometers.

everything as in everything from replacement batteries to make up and stuff

Report
poptot · 11/02/2006 22:13

Sorry UCM but please don't give the calpol and nurofen two hourly yuo will have no idea what you've given when and what's working and what's not. If you had to go to A&E (god forbid) it would be a nightmare to try and work out what you've given and what was still available to be given. The point of giving calpol 4-6hourly is thta is how long it is supposed to last.
