Hiya

My DS has it at the moment My mum has suggested using a cold teabag to wipe over the eyes, just literally wipe the eyes over and throw the teabag away. Have only done it once with DS and his eyes haven't been as bad this morning.

I've always wiped with water and cotton wool and it's cleared up after a few days. HTH.

Tea bags work a treat especially as it can be difficult to get drops in.

Has she had a cold very recently? If so, this is the contagious type of conjunctivitis. If she's no better in a day or 2 I'd definitely get some eye drops

If it is bacterial it will not go away on its own at all you need to go to the doctor and get medicine if it last more than a couple of days, and it is extremely infectious, look it up on NHS directs website. If it comes from having a cold particularly. it is so infectious school and nurseries send kids home who have it.

Viral conjunctivitis usually affects only one eye and causes excessive eye watering and a light discharge.

Bacterial conjunctivitis affects both eyes and causes a heavy discharge, sometimes greenish.

Allergic conjunctivitis affects both eyes and causes itching and redness in the eyes and sometimes the nose, as well as excessive tearing.

Giant papillary conjunctivitis (GPC) usually affects both eyes and causes contact lens intolerance, itching, a heavy discharge, tearing and red bumps on the underside of the eyelids.

Totally disagree with those saying bacterial cj doesn't go on it's own. My kids have had both viral & bacterial cj & both types have always gone of it's own accord, though it takes 2-7 days and may look awful in the meantime. Most important thing is to leave it alone; don't attempt to clean it -- you just spread the germs around if you try to clean them. Nobody has caught it off other people in our house, either.

Give calpol if child is obviously irritated by this infection. Safe to splash them clean in the bath or swimming pool; ime that is only way to clean the eyes that doesn't make them worse.
