ds is tired all the time - should I worry?

ds3 has just turned 3.

He is always tired. He goes to bed at 8pm ish and sleeps through til at least 7, sometimes later. He naps in the day for 2 hours. Despite sleeping this amount he always wants to lie down.

For a while now he has looked tired and lethargic, his eyes are heavy and he has an air of.....hmm...something about him....can't quite put my finger on it. Apart from a runny nose he doesn't seem obviously ill. He's just not his usual lively self iyswim.

Is it worth a trip to the doc's, putting him on vitamin tabs? Or is it just playgroup wearing him out (he goes 3 mornings a week)?

QE2 my DD (nearly 3 and a half) has been like this for at least the last week. Most nights she is going to bed by 6! She doesn't, I don't know, look right, but its nothing obvious. She has had a bit of a cough but only for the last couploe of days, and she was sick last week, but an isolated incident. Has also wet the bed twice in the last week. Not like her.

Just want to say, sounds like we are in the same boat. I thought it was playgroup, but i'm not convinced as she has been going for a while now.

I eagerly await your responses!

Went through this recently and I was so convinced he was habouring something serious. He was spending at least one day a week fast asleep and was pale, generally lethargic and off his food. Doctor kept telling me it was because he was catching a virus straight after having one and that it happens like that sometimes. After 4 weeks I managed to persuade the GP to run some basic blood tests. Lo and behold he suddenly perked up and nothing came back abnormal for the tests so I guess the Doc was right. My head was thinking terrible things though as he seemed so poorly.

My dd1 was like this last year( age 6)
She was sleeping 14 hours at night ,getting sent home from school for being too tired after a morning etc. Dr did blood test and she was anaemic and had a problem with white blood cells due to a virus not clearing up.
She has vitamins every day and is too have iron for 3 months and I have to push red meat/green veg/iron rich foods into her. She is a lot better now but still 'relapses' if she doen't eat properly for a couple of days.

Thanks for the replies. Hmmmm I think i will get him checked. He has slept for nearly 3 hours this afternoon and still looks shattered. Doesn't want his lunch either. He has eaten nothing at all since yesterday lunchtime.

I really don't want to frighten you but please get him checked, this happened to my friends son and was diagnosed with leukemia the week before last. It was only because he got hit and complained that his shoulder hurt so much that they took him to a&e they decided to do a blood test as he looked anaemic and lo and behold the worse result came back.

So please get him checked it is probably nothing worse than a virus but you never know. Is he complaining of aching limbs, bruising easier etc?

He doesn't talk yet (he has a speech delay) so wouldn't tell me if he ached anywhere.

dh commented tonight about the bags under his eyes. tbh leukaemia worries me as my dad has it and my cousin's baby died from it......

hi QE2, my dd ( 11) has been experiencing the same thing I took her to the doctors, first results came back fine but she wasn't feeling any better still tired all the time and complaining of her wrist joints aching.

Second results came back that she is low in iron, has to take iron supplement for 6 months. She has just said to me she is going to bed after her bath she is tired ( does not eat very much either). larsxx

On the more positive side, there is a bug going around. My ds1 is 4.5 and has done nothing but lay on the couch or floor for the last two days and is sleeping for England. 16 hours last night. He has also barely eaten. I am not worried as I am sure its a bug.

Worth going to GP but there's definitely a nasty lethargic/no-appetite bug going round. It knocked DD out for at least 3 wks. In the end they did blood tests... she too perked up as the results (fine) came back
