dd 8mth and got high temp...

Can anyone advise me...

DD was sick about 6 times late last night and early this morning. Following advice from nhs direct we have given her drinks little but often and she has had "bland" foods such as banana and toast. She isn't herself today but seems ok ie she is smiling and playful etc. Quite clingy and tearful but I expected this as she is not well.

Not sure if her top teeth are coming through.

Thing is, tonight I have taken her temp with an ear thermometer and it's ranging from 38-39 degrees...I am not happy about this and a little concerned.
ADVICE WANTED!!!

I have given her calprofen (ibouprofen) at 8pm and she has now has 3 doses speaced out over today which is the maximum..would you give her calpol as well now (paracetamol) or would you see about taking her to a&e...???

She has been placed to sleep in a cool room and is not over dressed but her head does feel warm. She has been sleeping since 8pm but is quite restless and is "moaning" while sleeping iykwim...

Yes, she can have Calpol as well, SHHHH. Dosage is 4-hrly for calpol, 6-hrly for ibuprofen, but when one alone doesn't work the combination often does. Hope she feels better in the morning

thanks for your reply janh. I will give her calpol now as well. Thanks again. Would you worry about the temp or is it usual for babies to have high temp when teething etc..?

try stripping her off and/or removing bed clothes to get her temp down as well. They often get high temps without any other discernable causes/symptoms. Teething could be it. Her temp should start to come down very soon.

Teething can cause all sorts of side-effects IME! But the fact that she's been sick a lot suggests that she has some kind of bug on top of the teething - if she is still very poorly in the morning even with the Calpol/ibuprofen double dose then I would ring NHS Direct with her symptoms and see what they say.

I think from other threads on MN that there is a vomiting bug around so they may just say that and advise lots of fluids etc. Hope you all have a peaceful night anyway!

If her temp doesn't come down within an hour I would call Nhs direct again.

My DS was like that on monday & was right as rain again by weds.

There not alot more you can do apart from what you already are, but i recommend a spray called eau-de-cologne 4711 you can get it from some chemists & you apply it to forehead, neck & tummy & it brings their temp right down.(wonderful stuff).

I gave her medicine at 8pm and thought it would have come down by now...I have just given her calpol now. Fingers crossed they both help.

We did just have her in a baby grown but she was getting cold although her temp wasn't coming down and her head was still warm.

Will wait about stripping her off as she is kind of sleeping so don't want to wake or stress her iykwim.

Just worried about high temp............

Well, try opening a window for a few minutes to cool the room down.

If she is sleeping happily atm then i wouldnt be too worried anyway.

thanks again everyone. I will leave it another hr and then see where to go from there. NHS direct yesterday gave us a 3hr call back timescale!!! I though it would be alot sooner with a baby..? They did say a bug was going around. Lellow I will look for that spray asap.!!! Sounds wonderful.

Those kiddy migrane/temp forhead things are not for babies..anyone know.? I have a sample..

Oh they are! If she is sleeping soundly atm then i would say she is on her way to feeling better.

4711 is refreshing but not really medically cooling (the sort of thing your great-aunt would use on a train journey )

Don't know what you mean by the forehead things?

janh just "googled" that cologne, its a mens cologne..? Is that right? What about that "cool air" spray thingy, would that do th same thing as we have that.

The forehead things are those "kool and sooth" I think they are called. A bit of gel that you place on abbies forehead.?

BTW just changed dd's nappy and it's loose, green and got lots of mucus and white bits in it..sorry if tmi..
Is this normal for a tummy bug or a sign of tething or something else. Sorry to pester you all but dh & I are still learning!

Thats the thing Shhh it could be either because she has been sick it could be a little bug and her stools are loose or it could be teething. It does sound as if she has a little viral bug. As I said give her an hour and take her temp again, if its still high give nhs a call.

SHHHH hope dd is feeling better this morning and you all had a restful night. i thought i shld write cause my dd (6.5m) is the same. she vomitted friday night and then all yesterday has had diarrhoea. and i noticed white flecks in her nappy too as you say! she did seem to tolerate her feeds yesterday tho but has gone right off since last night, after vomitting more. i called nhs direct as well and they do say small feeds often so i will try that today. have no idea what is going round but i hope it all goes away soon. let us know how you are getting on, good luck.

just to update this thread and to thank those of you who gave advice.

I posted on saturday night as I was concerned about dd. She was vomiting and had a temp of 39 deg. Anyhow ended up in a& e sunday morning and 8 hrs later were told she has a urine inf or this bug/gastroenteritus.The result have since cleared dd of a unrine ifc

Once home sunday night I felt rough and started to vomit as well. Dh started with it the following day. All 3 of us are slowly getting over it.

BTW it's been reported on "this morning" yesterday, not a nice bug at all ..!!!

Hope everyone is better soon. xx
