hello, new here so forgive any glaring errors ...

my wife and i are expecting twins, shes currently 30 wks and has been hospitalised for the past week with pre eclampsia. her protein is +2, blood pressure being medicated and is down from highs of 100+ to around 90

i just wondered if anyone had been in a similar situation as i'm finding it hard to get decent advice from the nhs, and i'm struggling to work out what it all means in terms of how bad does it have to get for the babies to be delivered etc

thank you very much
richard

Hi richard, I saw your earlier post under multiple births, I'll give it a bump for you as it may get more responses

sorry I don't have any advice though!

Hi richard, how is your wife? Taking it easy I hope.

I had pre-eclampsia. from 31 weeks I had been getting protein in my urine...I only had the protein so the midwife kept an eye on me & repeated the tests weekly for 4 weeks. After consistent protein she referred me to hospital to have it checked out. On the day I first went they did my BP which was high, but we had waited about 45min to see the consultant & DH was getting irate so it wound me up, took bloods & put me on a foetal heart monitor, scary!

Baby was fine on the monitor so I was told I could go & they would contact me later that day with the results of the bloods. In the meantime I had to collect every drop of urine I passed in a 24 hour period (they wanted to test the amount of protein per liquid volume of urine) & go back to see the midwife team on 2 days later (a Friday). The bloods came back fine which meant that kidneys etc were functioning OK. I went in on the Friday & took my huge sample. Again on the foetal heart machine. Baby, again was fine, BP was down & good. I was told to call on Tuesday re the results of the 24 hour urine.

I called & was informed that the protein was high & I needed to go in at 1.30pm on Wednesday & see the consultant. We waited about 10 minutes to see him & when we did my blood pressure was 140/110. The 110 figure should usually be about 65-75 in an ideal world, so as you can see, mine was way too high.

I was kept in to be induced & delivered my baby by c-section at 11.28 that night. The way to cure it in my case (and other cases, I believe) is to deliever the baby). The team didn't seem to concerned about mine until they had the protien results along with such a high BP, then they acted V fast.

Richard, should have said, DD born at 36 weeks. Light birthweight (4lb 4oz) but is now a very lively, healthy 2.4 yr old.

Demand to see a consultant if you feel you are being left in the dark. She is in the best place & will be well looked after.

Good Luck.

thanks melissasmummy. she is taking it easy, (has no choice really in hospital) but i am worried that her blood pressure is still around 160 over 100 despite her taking it easy and taking medication for it. i just hope it can be controlled for another couple of weeks to give the babies the best chance.

and please forgive my utter ignorance, but what do DD and DH stand for ?

thanks again, richard

Richard - not really the same situation but maybe the outcome will leave you feeling positive.

My ds was born at 30 weeks (waters went) he weighed 4lb. He was in SCBU (Baby Unit) for 3 weeks to grow up a bit! (Still waiting for that to happen!!! not really) Anyway he is now nearly 12 years old, 5'6" and 10 stone, very healthy, always has been.

BUT the MAIN thing that happened to him was that he had the special drugs (injected into me) to mature his lungs before he was born. I waited about 5 days before he was born so had a few doses of this drug, but even only one dose can make all the difference.

So whatever happens please ask them to give your wife the drug "to develop babies lungs" - sorry I can't remember what it is called, if they don't why not?

Sorry this is so long and in some ways not relevant but hope it helps a little bit.

Good luck to you all.

Put a call out for Mears or any of the other wonderful midwives that frequent the site if you are not getting the information you need. I found them a godsend durring my recent pregnancy.
