does mirena coil help stem depression for pill users?

does anyone know if switching to the mirena coil could help improve depression, as being on the pill is contributing to it? also what are the pros and cons of the mirena coil? is it painful? does it interfere with everyday stuff..
and is it that much different from other older-style coils?
also did anyone read the article about the pill causing a decrease in women's sex drive? anyone know is mirena coil would be a better choice in that specific area?
thanks...

well my friend that was very depressed taking the Pill was absolutely fine with the Mirena. But I wouldn't touch the Mirena with a bargepole, as I became very depressed taking the mini-pill. Think the only way you will find out is to suck it and see as it were. My friend with the Mirena was absolutely thrilled with it, conceived within a couple of months of it being taken out, and wants to have one inserted again. The difference between Mirena and the older style coil that older style coils are slightly less effective than the Mirena in preventing PG and the older coil is more likely to give you heavier periods. With the Mirena, you may get a lot of irregular bleeding/spotting the first few months, but that should settle down so that you get ligher or no periods.

btw progesterone can have depression/exacerbating depression as a possible side effect. I think the theory is that because the progesterone is localised to the womb in the coil, it is less likely to cause side effects than say the depo injection or mini-pill.

Oooh that thread is very interesting Nemo. It's also really interesting to see that people's problems with progesterone were so similar to mine - i.e. the depression seems to come on as killer PMT, and it takes up more and more time in the cycle. Think that's definitely confirmed my decision to get a non-hormonal coil if I have to stop taking the pill, rather than Mirena.

Think it's all about trial and error with contraception, got to find the one ok for you. I had the Mirena and it made me have really bad PMS so went on cilest pill and now feel great!
