Weird welty sort of rash ...

Before bed today, DS1 (4) was scratching his thighs quite madly. We found a small weltlike sort of spot, almost like an alergic reaction, on the top of one thigh.

He seems generally ok. No new washing powder etc. He did have startling amounts of e-numbery food this afternoon (birthday party).

I'm not very worried, but I'm a bit perturbed. Any ideas what this could be?

It sounds like what I have at the moment as a suspected reaction to penicillin. My doctor diagnosed it as Urticaria and prescribed an anti-histamin tablet. It's an itch that goes very red and hot when you scratch it and then slightly swells with a whitish lump (sorry, rubbish description!) May be a google search for Urticaria might tell you more. hope that helps.

DD sometimes gets what we think are hives - red, welty type rash usually on legs but can appear anywhere really - arms, face, body. We have yet to discover a particular cause and a dose or two of Piriton syrup usually does the trick.

sounds like hives - try putting a mild (0.01%) steroid cream on it to relieve itch or a dose of anithistamine. To be in only one spot is most likely a contact allergic reaction. If it was something he ingested it would be more widespread. Try to think what he did just before came out.

It was just after his bath. But we haven't changed soaps or anything.

His brother went into the bath just before, with a biscuit in his hand, which turned into goop in the bath. Can't see that causing a reaction, though ...

It sounds like urticaria

does this sound like it?

Tried to find a photo but couldn't but when DD had it, it looked just like a very bad case of nettle rash??

Um, we don't really clean the bath ... it's a baby bath, just really gets rinsed.

It could have been urticaria. It sounds about right. But there was really just one spot that came up.

misdee, I have no idea what he had - there were scary-coloured crisps, there were scary-coloured drinks. The drinks were sugar-free, which is worse than the sugary stuff, in my view.

I forgot to check if the bump was there the next morning. He's certainly not been complaining about itching since.
