dh has had a sore throat for at least two weeks if not three now. has been to gp who said was viral, been to homeopath who gave him some stuff. it receded a few days ago, it had moved from left to right side and then seemed to be going but now is back on left side again! any amazing remedies or thoughts...he's getting v depressed with it tbh....

sympathies to him

I had a sore throat on and off for almost the whole winter about four years ago and it did make me depressed - according to my acupuncturist that is quite a common side effect as the lymph glands can often be infected.

anyway, the thing that finally helped me was:

this

i assume he's gargling with aspirin?

the only thing that worked for me with a recent sore throat that lasted 2 painful weeks was to put a paracetamol in my mouth and just let it sit there (originally discovered this due to being rotten at swallowing pills plus a really good movie on TV). that way the throat gets bathed in a solution of paracetamol over a long period and that gave good but temporary relief

sympathies

I too have had the sore throat from hell which laid me out in bed for 3 days with the full body headache, shakes, shivers, sweats, nausea etc... (you get the picture!) Doctor also confirmed it was viral and to 'keep my fluids up', nothing else he could do for me. Have worked my way through various syrups, lozenges, sprays (chloroseptic didn't work as it didn't get far enough down my throat) I found aspirin gargles x3/day, co-codamyl tablets (paracetamol & codeine) and Strefen lozenges worked well in combination. The Strefen is made by Strepsil and the active ingredient is an Ibuprofen type drug. My sympathies to your DH - one week on and I am still sore, still have night sweats and am feeling fatigued, jaded and depressed!

I think if he's feeling really bad he should go back to the GP - especially if it goes on much longer. One of the first signs of something like glandular fever can be a persistent sore throat. They can do a swab and send it off if there's any doubt as to what's causing it.
