Annoyed with Hosp & think ds had scarlet fever

Ds been poorly for a week now, went to see dr on Thurs last week as he had v sore throat & fever & glands. Dr said virus (no surprise as she always says that). Said to come back next day for check up. Bought him back & overnight he exploded in a rash - surnburn like, red, hot to touch on thighs, bum, bits and tum. Dr forst said def viral. Tested his wee and protien++ so off to hospital for further inverstigation. Tookhis blood and swab. Son is getting worse and worse. Told allergic reaction to virus etc uticaria rash (my arse - sorry). Anyway discahrged. Following day back again as ds worse still. Same reply except he has a problem with is blood as a enzyme is higher than it should be and he needs further tests.

Got phone call today , ds needs to go back in as needs anti biotics as it is bacterial streptococcus infection and also needs more blood taking (poor love). Have just done investigating online as ds is now much improved but still contagious as not treated with anti biotics yet and still sore throuat and milder rash. THing is looking online at Scarlet Fever and the symptoms are identical! Thing is i asked registrar if thins was a possibility and she poo pooed me. Also ds now has rash in genitals and around mouth, she just ignored it. Dont get me wrong she was polite but made me feel stupid.

Am so cross for ds being in so much discomfort and that is was treated as a hives rash!

Am sat here fuming wanting to do something about it. Doent know what to do.

It could be scarletina fever \look{http://www.drhull.com/EncyMaster/S/scarletina.html\here} I think actually reading that, that is what I had, I know I had to have my kidneys and liver checked afterwards as it can affect them

I would have thought at the hospital they could have diagnosed him. So frustrating that seemingly knowledgable individuals cannot diagnose conditions and just say automitcally viral. So annoyed as the risk of it developing into something more serious was higher as well.

started in his underpant area too. he was typical of the disease and i pointed out his strawberry tongue.

They were worried his kidneys were reacting because of the ++protien. It still hurts him when he starts to go to pee and his is peeling and sore around his bits. Also now has red spots around mouth and worried gone on to impetigo. Although the pencillian shoudl clear it i hope.

So annoyed that he has had to wait a week for correct treatment. Raash is pretty much gone but skin quite rough

I had regular outbreaks of this, I kept going to the doctors and they kept giving me antihisamines, getting me needing stronger and stronger one ech time, eventually one of the doctors said it was Scarletina Fever (sorry not scarlet fever)and gave me the right medience and I haven't had an outbreak since. The doctor said it was sometime to do with my body fighting an infection (sore throat) and forgetting about my skin and that is what the rash is.

mmmm that is not the rash I had, I had hives all over my body.

that sounds so familiair. About 6 weeks he was diagnosed with tonsillitis and was given short course of anti biotics. His sore throat returned and was told viral. Accepted this but he kept fighting it off and then it came back with sickness/tummy ache etc. Been going on for weeks really one thing after another. At least he has the right medicine but he has missed so much school and I have missed so much work/placement hours. And he has been more grumpy because of feeling rought which has a knock on effect poor love.

His was that red and burning hot. Really really scarey. Started in his bits/buttock and thighs then tummy and back (they tried to say it might be washing powder. Then in armpit/legs pits neck and cheeks. He was so itchy and in loads of pain too. When all shivery because the heat loss from his rash. We were so frightened too.

I was lucky it never went to scarlet fever, I guess it because I am bigger, but it did keep coming back, and everything ached, the balls of my feet hurt so much.

Poor you, we hadnt been careful either with the infection side of it as we believed it was a virus. bugger!

Do you think i should speak to gp and how do i do this without sounding too cross. Being in the profession i know all to often that you can get blacklisted for making a 'fuss' but this is my son and if i dont stand up and say something who will

Just mention it and say could it have been Scarlett fever (or Scarletina fever) If they agree he will need to have his kidneys checked, make sure they do.

They have doen liver function test which is abnormal as enzyme too high related to bone so they are doing more tests and should have results tomorrow or next day. I think i will keep him off for remainder of week now, though i wonder if he will be better off going to school and seeing his friends i dont want him infecting them too.

Awen - my ds had scarlet fever - his was treated on day 2 though so wasn't as severe as your little one, it was actually my mum who dx'd him as she recognised the look and feel of the rash. Gp confirmed it. The rash peels on the hands and feet after a few days so don't be shocked it this happens.

Hope the blood taking goes ok today and he starts to feel better soon.

AFAIK its a notifiable disease.

Scarlet fever is related to the strep throat infection so the same ab's should help anyway. Are they being prescribed in response to the swab ? It annoys me that this can take so long to diagnose since there is a very quick test available for Strep throat.

ds had scarlet fever a few years back and his sounds a quite mild dose in comparison to your poor ds. Rash etc was much improved after 2 days of ab's and his skin, though rough, didn't peel. Is his tongue red and rough as the "strawberry tongue" is another classic symptom. I think it isn't very commonly seen in Uk these days which may mean that doctors are less able to recognise it and make an early diagnosis.

Hope your ds feels better soon
