Mine are always giving me problems. They are now the size of tennis balls, normally they're golf balls! It's only gojng to get worse as I get older, isn't it?

Does it hurt?

I had mine out about 8 years ago when I was thirty. They just got to be a right pain and would flair up every few weeks causing me sore throat, high fever etc. It does hurt but the strong pain killers you get take care of that side of it well. After 7-10 days you'll be glad you did it.

Had mine removed when I was 9 and had appendix removed at 16!!!

All I remember is having a sore throat for a few days after.

DS had his out this time last year when he was 2, wasn't a very nice experience for him bless him and was in a lot of pain for the first couple of days but he was very young I am sure its not so bad for adults!!!

It is much more traumatic apparently for an adult than a child. I had mine done when I was 6 or 7. All I can remember is eating jelly and icecream for days in hospital!

Dh had his removed as part of a larger op and it was a very painful thing, sorry. He got good pain meds though (insist on the hard stuff ) and was off work for about a week.

My sister is 27 and she had hers out a few weeks ago and she said it was no where near as bad as she expected. Also her ds who is 6 had his out last Tuesday. The Dr told her he had the biggest tonsils he had ever seen on a child his age, and apart from being a bit tearful and sorry for himself he says he feels ok and doent't really seem bothered and it has been less than a week since he had them done.

I must add though - they are both braver than me !!

was told by dr thart I would get tonsilltus every year til in mid 40s unless had them removed

had a friend whod had them out as an adult - he was off work for 3 weeks
I thought " 1 week for op, 2 just to be careful of infection"

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I was ill for 2 1/2 weeks - went to stay with parents cos lived alone - took mne 30 mins to eat tiny amount of food

it is a very bad op as an adult BUT worth it if you keep getting tonsilitus !!

hi
I had mine out 4 years ago when I was 30.I have never suffered since - felt like a new woman. Mine were actually leaking poison into my immune system and I always felt really ill.
kept warm after although it was in June!! it is worth it in the long run - only wish they'd done mine when I was younger and suffering

I had mine out when I was 18. Before that I used to get tonsilitis about once a month. Since then, I've been absolutely fine. Definitely the right decision. Recovery was slow (3 weeks off school in total) but I lost loads of weight because I couldn't eat much .

Had mine out at twenty-it is a very painful op as an adult. (But this was quite a few years ago and the only pain relief I was given was soluble aspirin-I am sure things have improved now!) And as others have said, the benfits make it worth it-I had been very unwell for months beforehand.

I had mine removed last year at 28years, I had enlarged tonsils which would develop into full tonsilitis several times a year it took constant battling with different gps to get me referred to ent in the hospital they said they would shrink as i got older but never did. The consultant took one look at them and said instantly yep they need removing i had them removed a few months later.
I agree it was painful for me but thankfully no infections. I had to stay in for one night the next day i had to eat toast as they said it was good for keeping throat clean so preventing infections. They gave me pain relieve in tablet form but my dh went straight out to the chemist to get me soluble pain killers.
Just over a year later i have only had a couple of mild sore throats. I feel having them removed was the best thing i have not looked back since, well worth the pain which only lasted a few days for me.

I did at 23. Does hurt and I got an ear infection (which is quite common). You need to say indoors for 2 weeks afterwards. Otherwise, glad to see the back of them.

Strange question but was anyone advised to buy their own instruments?

Had mine out at 22 (23 years ago ). It felt like Alsatians had been feasting on my throat, I couldn't believe how awful it felt. These days they don't give you ice cream etc but anything "hard" that will take away blood etc .... So I got out first because I ate the most crisps! Definitely worth doing, no more bouts of tonsilitis which were non-stop and AB jabs in the bum etc. 23 years ago I was in for about 4 days. DD has just had hers done, she's 2.5, and she was only in 2 nights. She is blimmin miserable though.

Had mine out at 36 after years of infections. Was not well for about 4 weeks afterward, also had heammorage and ended up being re admitted as emergency during the middle of the night. This was when they started using disposable instruments which massively increased the complication rate ( they have since stopped this). Even so, it was definately worth it, it wasnt until I had them out that I realised how the constant low level infection I was carrying was dragging me dowm. One good side effect was I lost about a stone!

I'm getting mine out on Wednesday and I can't wait! The consultant has said that it will feel like a bad bout of Tonsillitis but then it's over with. Not looking forward to the cornflakes and toast they make you eat to remove all the grot from the op site though (bluugghh!)

Monkeytrousers - Hopefully you'll get in quickly. I was only referred by my GP in mid september (in in Gloucestershire).
