Hello everyone. Has any of you got any ideas of what i can give my ds who is just nine months old. He has a nice phlegmy sounding cough, he's fine otherwise, not off his food or anything, no temperature and is happy enough, just got a bit of a cold i think. I just wanna be able to give him something to soothe his throat and make him more comfortable. He coughs more when laying down (as we all do) and it wakes him up.

Old Wives Remedy (which I tried in moderation and found it worked pretty well) is sugar and butter mixed together. I kid you not!! The sugar helps to break up the phlegm and the butter soothes the throat.

Linctuses are pretty ineffective ime. You'd be better treating the catarrh, using a humidifier or vaporiser, plus elevating his mattress at head end might help.

ds2 is 8 months and has croup...
advised to shut bathroom doors, run hot water for a bit then sit in bathroom and let him inhale the steam....
that may help

DD used to get terrible coughs. I used to boil a kettle in her room & drape wet towels on the radiators. Also use to give her a mixture of lemon juice in glycerine to help tickliness (lemon in honey as she got older)

vaporiser in room every night until one week after cough is gone. I also boil 1/2 cup water and add a blob of honey to dissolve and then cool to warm enough for him to drink. Tastes sweet so they drink it but should soothe back of throat. hth

Try a wet towel over the radiator with a few drops of eucalyptus oil sprinkled on it.

Was once told my GP that cough medicines are all pretty useless. With mine I would put 2 drops of Eucalyptus in a bowl of steaming water at night. I would top it up with fresh water when I went to bed, within 2 days the coughs were better. I also did the hot honey thing too, good for soothing.

sorry, that should read by my GP

Croup is inflammation of the windpipe that generally causes a bark-like cough. It can be serious when the windpipe gets really inflamed as it can cause difficulty with breathing - in these circumstances medical help should be sought.
